I want to make my own but don't have many tools. I was thinking of buying one of the predrilled blocks with a stem attached, what do you guys think of those? It would be carved with hand tools mostly

Pre-drilled kits are the way to go if you don't have the tools needed to do the drilling etc-- a drill press or lathe.

With limited tools myself, that is all I use for the regular pipes. If you use Facebook, look up Vermont Freehand. Steve has a great selection of blocks with a wide variety of stems to pick from. AND his prices are the best to be found.

Here's my second pipe, my take on the classic English saddle billiard, made with a pre-drilled kit I got from Mark Tinsky. My first pipe is too embarrassingly bad to show, but I learned a lot from my mistakes and I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out.

Nice work racerx ! I'm working on a similar pipe. A saddle bit billiard is hard to beat IMO.

Hello gents....oh and ladies

I use to be a cigar and pipe freek about 20 years ago, and for some strange reason i just stopped(don't ask why i couldn't tell ya) so fast forward to today or actually 4 weeks ago, i decidded to pick up the pipe again.......man what was i thinking......by stopping i mean....i forgot how relaxing and stress releaving a good pipe tobacco can be, any way, i decided to make my own pipe from scratch, nothing bought everything made by me by my own 2 hands out of raw materials, so without any further adieu, I give you my very first atempt (prototype) of a "poker" made out of 6061 aluminum sandblasted with machined accents, a cherry bowl insert, acrylic stem w/delrin accent spacer, also a quick tamper to go along with it.

Most interesting, I like it. Can I ask if the shank, top & bottom are screw in/on?

What is the finished weight?
thanks onepirotec. the shank is screwed into the bowl via 3/8-24 tread, the stem is standard 5/16" friction, the bowl is one piece with the cherry insert pressed in. i have not weighed it but it is pretty beefy, it definitely is not a pipe you want to just hang from the side of your mouth. got a chance to smoke it over the week end and it did really well, i was pleasantly surprised, i had never smoke a short stem pipe before so i did notice a little more warmth through the stem than normal. all in all i am pleased.

Man... These are incredible. I think I would more highly value a pipe I made with my own hands than a high-end pipe that I purchased. Nevermind that I can't afford anything...) I also liked Vermont Freehand on Facebook. :)

Some of you are my idols, I'd love to be able to do such work.
That being said, I am still proud of what I did. Here goes nothing:

Carver, handsome work. The spool shapes are unusual and unique, but I think I like the churchwarden best, for a sleek, refined look. All real nice.

haha, thank you Emesso (God it's odd to call someone by letters)

What do you mean by spool shapes? Concerning the CW... I have to say that I too like that one the most of all I made. Also, it's the first one for which I drilled the wholes myself.

I am also pretty happy with my last one, the small one on the right with a right ring on the stem. What do you think of that one? I wanted to make a pipe that reminded me of the Peterson SH series.
