I thought we were talking about domesticated pets. I mean, I'd keep Funk outside but not a pet cat.

Okay. Chickens? Goats?

Mind you, I’ve kept hawks and falcons indoors while keeping dogs and cats outdoors, and vice versa. I understand they all have a special place in our lives, but they’re animals. We can do what we think is best for them, but who’s to say what that is?

The only animals that have been living in my house non-stop are my children, and that’s because the law requires it. They get to stay inside even when they shit the bed.

My point is that, on a biological timescale, they’ve spent way more time outdoors than they have indoors. To posit that they “belong” indoors is almost as misguided as saying they don’t.

They obviously live longer inside than they do outside because they aren’t exposed to the same environmental and ecological pressures that they’d experience outside. At what expense? If we’re jumping on pet-centered moral high ground, what quality of life are you providing to a dyed-in-the wool, evolutionarily enhanced predator by keeping it inside that rivals the stimulation that it’d experience outside? Does a longer life mean a better life?

My only point is that you’re giving the cat a better life in your opinion. It makes YOU feel good that the cat is indoors, protected from predation, and with diseases remedied. That has no bearing on where it belongs, per se. Anthropomorphizing is a sticky subject when it comes to the animals to which we’ve grown so attached.

And I swear I’m not being snide, but I honestly had no idea that people adopted cats, particularly with signed agreements about not letting them outside. I just assumed folks got them from any number of free kittens ads that seem to exist all over the place. But I like the adoption path, to be honest. It has a certain “lay-away-esque” vibe to it. Let that cat get a little street cred before bringing it home!

And for the record, I’m 100% in favor of house cats remaining inside indefinitely. I say I’d likely have more on a bigger property, but the reality is I’d just cut my kids loose with .22’s to control rodents. House cats are indiscriminate hunters. Some of the only animals in the animal kingdom that will kill for sport vs. need. They’re hell on all types of nesting birds.

@mingc you mentioned avian predation on cats earlier. Can you elaborate? I’ve just never heard of this as being something serious enough to be concerned with...

Weird toilet behavior means an upset cat. That's just how cats are. Cat owners need to know that. If you don't want to deal with it, you should give the cat to someone who does. Please.
I agree. I would bet part of my cellar that there are either no good hiding places where she can hide the babies but also get the fuck out of dodge in multiple directions (i.e. not closed in), or that a wild animal or stray cat is lurking outside in the yard. Or both. Make sure she's got some good places to hide the babies and also make sure there are not other animals lurking around outside (depending on the animal there are options for how to chase them off). A few years ago my cat started acting up a lot and I knew why when I saw the foxes lurking around in the yard. Good thing is foxes don't like being seen or surprised so pretty easy to get rid of them (just startled them a few times and they stopped coming around.) Pretty much one of those two things is happening here. Stray cats do not like being sprayed with water you can either do it yourself with a spray bottle or they make these things that do it for you hooked up to motion sensors. And don't forget she may very well be aware of something out there that would absolutely kill the babies if it got a chance, you'd act up if you knew one of your neighbors liked eating children your sons age!

That might have been inferred... I do still dislike that shithead. But I believe when the smell leaves my memory, our relationship may be mended. She'll never step foot in my house again.. I did say that.
Richmond has already established himself as an animal lover. Why don't you guys refrain from adding another pile of shit to his situation. It was his son's bed and he is justified in being disgusted. I'm sure he will come to terms with this without you guys sifting the cat box.

Well the Funkhouse did put business out in the street... He should have known he's not entitled to publicly run his estate as he sees fit.

It sure seemed like an act of agression.. I believe she might have been jealous of the kittens. But who am I? The cat whisperer?

I got you.

I thought you were implying birds of prey were assaulting cats!

I’m always reluctant to buy into studies conducted by organizations with a mission. The references list on that second link is a bit suspect. Regardless, this topic is the reason I am in favor of all cats being inside.

nah not really aggression well not towards you. It's a new place and her mommy instincts are way in effect. Mommy instincts say mark your territory and hide the tots.
Oh I've been called a cat whisper many times. Cats and me get along really well.

I looked around at this one.. Seems there is no organization that is pro outdoor cats.. Its seems strange to me that people don't appreciate their pet's freedom.

I once bought Gingy a collar and when I put it on her she went absolutley nuts.. I never tried again. I admired her resistance.

Cats are cleanish creatures though.. they hate poop. Seems strange that she would choose that smell as a house warmer. They bury poop.. from even just a few weeks old. I still bet it was agression.. cats have bad attitudes at times.

Sure is cool that we all have a nice place for men to talk cats..

it's marking. She's putting the attention on herself keeping the kitten smell covered and making sure any bad mofos are looking for her not the kittens.
Yeah cats can be catty imagine that :)

Where I live it is against city bylaws to have cats or dogs live outside, and cats have to be licensed and leashed when out, the same as dogs. The city gives people cat traps to catch outdoor cats that poop in their flowers. There are an excessive amount of what the kids call "Karens" in my neighborhood, if you even leave your dog outside for longer than an our or two in the backyard there will be some angry 42 year old divorcee calling the bylaw enforcement officer on you.
