Oh, for the record. I have about 7 pounds of tobacco cellared, am amassing about a pound a month, smoke about an ounce a month, and I plan to live about another 65-70 years.

The term "tobaccopalypse" didn't get coined because we felt secure. Smokers are outcasts, pariahs, and the subject of a fair amount of demonization. More and more areas are closed to smokers. There are more and more restrictions on where you can smoke. There are higher and higher taxes. Less and less tobacco is being grown as growers turn to other, more profitable crops. Because of the announcement of the FDA Deeming Regulations, development of new blends has largely ceased and, thousands of blends will be forced off the shelves on 8/8/23.
Other than that, is there anything we should be concerned about?

FWIW, the terms "tobacolypse" and "tobaccoaplypse" were first used on this forum five years ago by the inimitable Numbersix.

"Well, you're not entirely wrong about that. The term "tobaccopalypse" didn't get coined because we felt secure....."
Thank you very much for your posts which I feel answered my original comment on this thread in the spirit it was intended to be taken. Remember I posted that it was "depressing", not offensive or morally wrong or stupid or should be illegal or anything else. Depressing.
I can understand the reasoning/mindset, which yourself and others had already expressed and I can see no reason not to be depressed about it!
I also absolutely stand by my statement that forums reward excess and provide a...singular mindset which is often extremely different from that of the outside world and which often has little benefit.

In watch forums, Rolex are seen as "mid-level". I don't know a single non-watch guy who thinks this. You get a review of new handwound Credor which retails for $65,000 and people will say "well priced." or "not bad but I'd rather have a..... for $10K more"

On photography sites there is a virtual civil war going on between Canon and Sony users.
On a break this morning I worked out that the average 40 year old smoker of 20 cigarettes per day would need to "cellar" 300,000 cigarettes.

This is not normal!

Don't forget that 500lbs is a quarter of a metric ton...of tobacco.

Most other forums include a sense of the ridiculousness of their obsessions but in this thread, there isn't. It's like bedding down before an onslaught.

After reading every post on this thread, I now accept, with an even heavier heart, that this mentality is well warranted.

I would propose to HappySmoker that you look up the definition of hoarding. And perhaps, collecting. I've purchased approximately 250 pounds of tobacco in 9 months. It is neither hoarding nor collecting. I suspect I'll buy at least another 150 lb before I'm done. I'm not a hoarder or a collector, I'm a Realist and an Optimist. While I can't predict the timing, I'm realistic about the future of tobacco. I'm realistic that it's not going to become more readily available or cheaper. I'm realistic about how it improves with aging. I'm optimistic I'm going to live long enough to smoke it all. And I'm positive I don't care what you think about any of that.
Based on your own consumption, it doesn't sound like I purchased tobacco that you would have bought instead. Sounds like you just had a bad day and tried to share your bad attitude with others. I hope tomorrow is better for you.

Bad attitude?
You can stick that mate!
It is obvious that you do care, otherwise you would not have posted.
Get a clue before you next post, eh? Do us all a favour.

Well, I used to sell Audemars Piquet and Vacheron Constantin...
So, yeah, Rolex is kind of a cheap watch...

That's fine, and sometimes I would agree with you. But members here often remark on how much help they have received from other members here. So we do some good here.
Forum participants are a niche portion of a niche population of a niche population...why would we matter to the outside world?
I also know some major collectors who's holdings would easily dwarf anything I've seen here and they have no interest in forums. There are a lot of circles in the pipes and tobaccos world.

But I do think the open aggression was out of order.
Well, that does happen and I don't think it's productive, but we all get flamed from time to time. It's a reality of social media. We all bump up against each other from time to time. I don't let this stuff bother me. Why get wound up over a tiny part of the virtual universe.

Ha!
I have had to talk myself out of a Leica several times. Just holding one makes you want one. Last time I did this, it was in a major Leica boutique in central Shanghai. Tried the latest Monochrome and I knew I had to have it

But ultimately, I was able to think rationally.
I am reminded of that scene from Wayne's World II with Kim Bassinger when Garth says "He is a dead man!"
