I went to the Luban Lu Photographic Mall a couple of weeks ago, "just for a look". Almost bought a Zeiss 90mm Macro but I'm going to wait until I feel "allowed" to buy a Sony A7RIII. Came very close to owning a Nikon D750, but yet more reports of shutter failures stopped me. Was being offered one brand new for under $1k!
Anyway, we digress. Thank you for your posts.

Didn't think this thread would end well, but it did. An option I've used is to withdraw, or in more colorful terms, to shut the fuck up. Makes sense to me because by this time I, who of a certainty am correct, but through no fault of my own and incorrectly injured by some squirrelly others, have said what I need to say two and three times over. At this point continuing is pointless. If one fears to loose face they have face to lose. It's a pipe forum for Chris' sakes! Thus withdraw. In any event fuck 'em if they can't take a joke!

I am currently using a Sony with the legendary Zeiss 55/1.8. The body is “only” an a6000, but it produces very nice images. I have found Capture One (which is free for Sony users), is a beautiful editting suite. Superclean RAW conversions up to ISO 1,600 and lovely colour rendition.
To Saltedplug, I was given a way out by Sablebrush, which I gratefully took and I thought it was better than leaving the thread in acrimony.

Like Jesse, I’ve used a wide variety of different cameras, from the 110 Pentax up to 8x10. For my work, I’ve relied on Canon since 1993, and that’s been a good choice for me. I recently added the Sony A6500 for quick shoots and B-roll video. They’re ok, but the slow autofocus makes them useless for most work. Also, too many buttons that do too many things in too small of a space. It looks like I’ll have to wait a while for a true pro-grade mirrorless from Canon. My experience with Sony’s covoluted firmware and ergonomics keeps me from considering the A7/A9 line.
As for cellaring, I have a very nice late-model Crown Graphic put away. It just keeps getting better all the time.

This thread is fun. So on the topic of cellaring...
So I switched from cigars to pipes about a year ago. I found a well-recommended blend that I really liked (FMC), and as I neared the end of the tin and went to re-order, found out that it was no longer being made and the company went out of business. Then I heard of the deeming regs for the first time...
So my first year of pipe smoking has been characterized by trying small tins of well liked blends and if I find something I really like, grabbing a little bit extra. Something that I try and LOVE I might order a few pounds to cellar. Right now I'm sitting on about 25 pounds. Most of that is bulks I like and got on serious discount and want to get some age on it. I probably have 5 pounds of PS LBF after that last sale a few weeks ago. But my main emphasis is to find out if I like a blend enough to cellar deep because it is going to be affected by the deeming. For example, I love Chelsea Morning and Plum Pudding. So whenever I can get 8oz cans on sale I grab a few. I also love GLP Westminster, but it came out before the arbitrary date, so I'll grab some of that after the hammer falls.
So in summary, I guess my cellaring is in part for aging, and in part for future scarcity. Right now, there's only a few blends that I "can't live without" and will get affected by the FDA so I'm focusing on them. In the meantime, I'm still trying out a bunch of new stuff and trying to enjoy the last days of the "golden age".

That's what I figured out years ago. You never know when a blend will disappear so if you love it buy it like crazy. I wish I had known that when Mephisto was still available. I'm over 200 pounds in my closet and still going. I don't strive for aging, I just want it on hand for when I can no longer afford it.

Yeh, retirement is a fixed income for most of us. When the time comes, which is not so very far away, I worry about how I can keep the lights on, much less being able to buy more tobacco. So cellaring is a way of insuring that I can smoke my beloved pipes well into my old age. Plus, I can smoke aged tobacco... while eating catfood in the dark. Yeah!!!

Catfood always smells like Vienna Sausages to me.
I have fond memories of my father eating Vienna sausages on saltines along with spanish peanuts in his Pepsi. It was his go to snack while watching the White Sox.

I think if you prefer zooms, many of Sony offerings are a bit slow in the AF dept. I bought one prime and never used a zoom again! The A6000 performs well with the 55/1.8. I mostly have shot street (NOT blurry, out of focus, couldn't be bothered to straighten or find a subject more interesting than two people smoking in the High St Street) and have also shot a couple of pick-up games using the 12 shot per second mode. It works well for me, fast and accurate and of course has great coverage of the sensor although I must add the caveat that I almost never shoot in bad light, which of course is the real strength of the Pro AF systems. I had a bad experience with a Nikon D5100 and its infamous back-focus issues. I never bought another mirrored camera. I know a lot of Canonistas talk about "the ergonomics problem" with Sony but it never bothered me because I never had to unlearn the Canon way. I always use A mode, have ISO set to C1, Exp Comp on C2 and off I go! Also, for candids/street/reportage/whatever in China when you already stick out like a sore thumb, a full frame DSLR is not a good idea.
As for retirement, I'm too scared to even think about it!

I'm amazed by you guys who talk about having hundreds of pounds in the cellar or buying 250 pounds in the last few months with still more to go. My cellar feels ridiculously gluttonous to me, like I'll probably never smoke it all and should have exercised a little more self control. I'm truly embarrassed when my friends see it and it's under 30 pounds. Hanging out with you guys makes me feel so much more normal. Thanks for that.

I think we kind of settled this and moved on.

Yeh, I have forgotten about the Press View and the Speed Graphic. Haven't touched them for years. I still keep my Canon F1n with the Olympic rings on it and my Ftb. Haven't used them in ages, but a lot of good memories attached to them.
