Guess what? Everybody is entitled to their opinion. I don't have to agree with it. There are smokers with 3 tins and smokers with 500 lbs. Really, so what?
I may think that a septuagenarian with 500 lbs in the cellar who's still buying more has some behavioral issues, but so what? That's his issue to live with, not mine.
Can we all lay off all the personal crap? It doesn't help. Save it for another thread.
How much should someone cellar? There's no correct answer to that. You can try to guesstimate, based on rate of consumption and expected life expectancy, but it's still only a guess. You might get hit by a truck later today, or unexpectedly croak out at any moment. Your rottweiler may mistake you for a chew toy. Your rate of consumption may change. The kinds of blends you like may change. You may just get tired of the whole business and quit. Too many unknowns for any kind of answer.
I cellared for a number of reasons. I wanted to be able to smoke what I liked when I felt like it. I knew that blends disappear without warning so I stocked up on blends that I liked. If I want to smoke some Klondike Gold, all I have to do is open a tin. It's nice to be able to do that. Good luck finding Klondike Gold at a store, or McClelland that matter.
I cellared as a hedge against price increases, or increased taxes. We all knew that at some point, the fecal matter would hit the spinning blades, and it did with the FDA Deeming rules.
I cellared because I liked the way a particular blender made a particular blend and knew that the blend could switch hands without warning. A&C Peterson's Escudo is a very different blend than what STG is making, and for me, a much superior version.
I cellared to have some hard to find stuff to share or to gift to people I like who can never seem to find it. I've given away, or shared, pounds of unobtanium, some of it on this forum.
I cellared because I wanted some aged blends to smoke later on, while I enjoyed fresher stock.
I calculated how much I smoke a year and cellared based on that. But it's only a guess. So, my major purchasing is done. But I still buy a little bit here and there when I've found a blend that I didn't know about before, that I really like. Did I overdo it? Hell if i know. If I screwed up, then I screwed up and it's not anyone else's problem. Check back after I'm dead.
And if I have to quit, then I'll sell it all off. Given my family's genetics, I don't have nearly enough to get to the grave. But I'm done because it's enough for the foreseeable future.
There's no right or wrong with any of this. There are only choices. What anyone else thinks of my choices isn't my business. What anyone else does, as long as it has no direct or indirect impact on me, isn't my business.
