Pipes with filter vs Non filtered ???

The only filter system that I use any more is the Brigham rock-maple tubes. They absorb some of the moisture, however can still accept a pipe-cleaner. The only downside I have found with *new* Brighams is their seeming obsession with gooping up the tobacco chamber with sodium silicate...

I need a bottle of false char

Are you talking about carbon-coatings? If so, in my experience tobacco, heat and time are better than any chemical compound on the market...but if you do insist on painting the inside of your bowls, for the love of all things holy, avoid sodium silicate like the plague it is!

HPB Pipe: Question on What it is and What to do With it

Greg; it might be a good chance to play around with fills of your own. If it were me, I would pick out those unsightly pink gobs of putty, and mix up some briar dust and epoxy to replace them. It won't be perfect, but it should look a far cry better than at present. And hey - if you're still...

    Harshness... Causes and Fixes....

Shawn, I get the burn you describe from some of my favourite blends as well, but it goes even further, with noticable swelling of the soft-pallate and irritation of the hard. I have found that drying your tobacco almost to the point where it turns to dust before your eyes can help to alleviate...

I'm the only pipe smoker I know personally, so...

My wife does tend to sit on the opposite side of the couch when I have just partaken in one of my favourite Lat-bombs (or C&D Great Outdoors, but the room-note on said blend is a class of its own); however she sidles up beside me when I have been into the aromatics. VaPers, Virginias, (minimally...

Unfortunately, the crafty jewlery crowd has already beaten you to the punch...

    Go Steelers!!!

Grew up loving the Broncos and I will always follow the boys in blue and orange, but these days I have to say that my affinity has moved to the closest thing we have to a home team here in B.C.; the (terribly named) Seattle Seahawks. I mean seriously, way to pick an animal that instills fear or...

    Talking about stems...

I've seen (or own) examples of stems made of amber, bone, wood, ivory, reed, bamboo, clay, celluloid and other proto-plasics. In addition to vulcanite and lucite (and the different proprietary versions of the materials); pipe-makers have been known to use bakelite (usually found on old pipes)...

To Bristle Or Not To Bristle: A Poll

I too reach for the bristled when I'm performing a deep-cleaning; although for some reason I have convinced myself that they will wear out vulcanite - so my stems only see regular (tapered or fluffy as applicable) type cleaners. Ouch! 8O

    How to Put...

No surprise here - I have yet another theory! I suspect that cigars (and to a lesser degree, cigarettes) pick up that acrid flavour when allowed to go out simply because the smoke particles trapped in the tobacco cool, and cause micro-droplets of bitter nastiness to adhere to the tobacco -...

    Alberta, Canada Tobacconist

I'm from B.C.; however I have family scattered from Cardston to Grande Prairie, so I try and cross the Rockies for at least a couple of weeks each year - this year being the exception; it's not a drive I would make with an infant and a toddler unless I had to.

    Addicted...

While I wouldn't say that I am necessarily addicted to my pipes, I would say that I am most definitely addicted to tobacco products. I can put down my pipe without concern - however before long I will find myself reaching for the humidore with a nostril full of snuff, a lip full of chaw (ok, not...

    Can I just smoke a....

I do this fairly regularly - with a toddler, an infant, and a business to take care of and a propensity to keep a pipe burning whenever possible means I often have to set my pipe down mid-bowl. In fact, if you peruse the forums, you will find this practice even has a name - the Delayed...

    Alberta, Canada Tobacconist

Thanks for the list slownumbers39 - I'll toss in that I've had good experiences with the tobacconist in West Edmonton Mall; for the life of me I can't seem to remember the name, unfortunately. Have you noticed Sheffield and Sons seems to be getting...well...better? A couple of years ago, a trip...

    Meerschaun Draw Fix

Clint; while I can't speak for the Walker operation, Nightowl Pipeworks performs something they call the 'Bulletproof Meer Conversion', where he opens up the draw and reworks the internals that I can tell you is like night and day.

    new Stokkebeye generation 4

Remember Sweetbriar, it goes both ways. Leonard can tell you all about the wide variety of Danish tobaccos that Lane is responsible for the distribution of - including the Peter Stokkebye line-up (which, coincidentally was distributed by a Swiss based company before Lane took over). It is easy...

    Dr. Grabow Omega Smooth

I also have an Omega, and although it smokes wonderfully and offers the orific-bit I so crave in a Virginia pipe; I do have one complaint. It features a similar design to the Peterson System-Pipe, including a well to trap condensate - but also features a mortise for a 6mm filter in the stem. I...
