Im looking to get another pipe, and i want to upgrade to something a little more $$. Some where around $100 bucks. What are your thoughts on pipes with filters vs non filtered pipes. Also what typs of filters do you think work good and ones that dont. (6mm vs 9mm, balsa wood, metal, and other kinds i might not know about.) Just looking for some input on the subject b4 i make a purchase.

I dislike any metal fllter or stingers... The only filter I use is a balsa in my savinelli 320 and I don't use them that often. It seems they change the flavor of the smoke. I tried a Carey and their paper filters, and threw it away.

I have a Savinelli in that price range and it smokes great. I tried it with the balsa filter and found it to be quite absorbent; but I prefer to smoke it without the filter. Same thing for paper filters in cobs and Medicos (they seem to trap more tars and gunk than the balsa).

The only filter system that I use any more is the Brigham rock-maple tubes. They absorb some of the moisture, however can still accept a pipe-cleaner. The only downside I have found with *new* Brighams is their seeming obsession with gooping up the tobacco chamber with sodium silicate (water-glass) as a bowl-coating - a real pain in the arse to remove.

I have Winslow's with 9 mm filters and Savinelli's with 6 mm filters and never use the filters, I bought them knowing I would never use the filter. I believe a filter will change the taste of the tobacco so why use it. If you buy a good quality pipe that is properly drilled, it will not smoke wet there by negating the need for a filter. If you tell me what style of pipe you like, I can recommend some choices for you. In your price range you can get a very good smoking pipe. Are you looking for brand new or would you prefer a pristine estate piece?

I've read that filters are commonly used in Europe but not in the U.S.. I've not used them mainly because I cannot see myself buying them over and over, etc.
Also, I doubt that they make the smoke "less toxic", anymore than filters on cigarettes do. They prolly do reduce gurgle and burning ones tongue, so if you smoke hot, it might help. For what it's worth, I'd recommend not using a filter and instead learn good lighting and smoking techniques.
That being said, if you go for a Savinelli for your first $100 pipe, you won't go wrong. They can accomodate both filters and all of them come with an adapter so you can choose to not use a filter.
And as they say, "you can't go wrong with a sav". :puffy:

Thats a good question. One i cant answer. I was hoping to get a bunch of feed back on this topic. I am looking at a Savinelli: Alligator Black (413 KS) (6mm). I love the look of this pipe but i have never had a pipe with a filter. I just hope it smokes as good as it looks. My brother smokes capt. black in his Dr Grabow pipe and he always uses filters. I was looking for some other opinions besides his, cause he thinks im crazy for wanting a pipe that costs more than 20 bucks. He also thought i was crazy for getting tins of good tobacco that cost more than the Drug Store stuff he smokes. But he soon realized there is a whole world of tobacco out there that can actualy tast and smell good, but you might have to pay a little more for it.

I have a couple Vauen pipes with the 9mm Dr. Perle filters. The filter keeps out a lot of the moisture but it restricts the draw so I don't use them.

when you buy a savinelli you get a pack of filters and an insert to be used in place of a filter. so you can try it both ways and see what you prefer.
stingers are lousy. i had one and hated it.
if you want an excellent $100 pipe and art ok with an acrylic stem buy a stanwell. if buying a sav check before buying - some of their models have an acrylic stem and some have vulcanite (if you have a preference).

I have a Savinelli Duca Carlo with the 6mm filter. Sometimes I use them sometimes I don't. The converter is useless because when I try to use it it makes the fit so tight that I cannot put the pipe togethor. Does anyone else have this problem?

I only use my 9mm filter pipe when I am smoking a couple of Virginia blends which burn so fast that I am drawing so lightly on the pipe I don't notice the restriction.
If you buy any filter pipe, with the exception of Brighams with the rock maple filters, be sure to get one with an adapter so you can use it either way. Then you have the best of both worlds.

i always use a filter with the cob, otherwise i get tobacco bits in my mouth. i never use the 9mm filter one of my bent apples was made for, because it restricts the draw too much. with the grabow it doesn't seem to make a difference. and the savs i have work fine with the filter so i'll use them for now, although sometimes i don't.
every pipe needs to be evaluated in and of itself.

Do filters make the smoke cooler in your mouth?
Depends on what you mean by cooler. I enjoy 9mm charcoal filters a lot, but those are really the only filter types that appeal to me much, after smoking every kind out there over the years. A 9mm charcoal filter will take a good bit of the acidic burn out of a bitey tobacco, and make it more pleasant to smoke. It also mutes the flavor a bit, but with some tobaccos this is a blessing - I look at it not as, "This is better than that", but rather as a case where you adapt to get the best out of the style of pipe according to its material, filter, etc. For instance, sugary Danish-style aromatics that are hot and biting without a filter become very pleasant with one, and the slight flavor reduction actually works in their favor because it cuts down on the sugar overload in a lot of flavored tobaccos to make them more enjoyable. When I lived in Europe, I had a favorite Stanwell aromatic that I'd only smoke with a 9mm filter pipe, because it was much better that way AND it was a crowd pleaser that was hard to beat (smelled like Christmas ginger cookies).
The only type of filter I would advise to actively avoid are those metal stinger things, which are just a pain and offer zilch in smoking improvement. 9mms are my favorites, balsas second.

Thanks for answering my question. My girlfriend has a problem with bite and wants to get into the hobby. This is something I have been considering that might help her out.

Tried all filters available the only proper one for me is the 9mm..this is widely used in Europe mainly Germany. I just placed an order for two Abi Natur pipes and I asked for them to be made with filters. They tend to absorb the juices and you use less pipe filters to dry while you are smoking. I must emphasise that getting used to those filters will make it difficult to smoke non filtered pipes.
