I've made a huge mistake (maybe).

Marc, tins are good for storage, but bulk is a better deal $$ wise and I have a lot that has been stored in canning jars for more than 5 years. All as fresh, but better with age, as the day I put it in the jars.

    pipe making

Walnut is another that many use, myself included. They smoke well, the wood works easily and they hold up pretty well to smoking. Be warned though, a dust mask should be worn when working with the wood as from what I've heard, the dust can be toxic/dangerous if you breathe it while working the...

They Took Out The Smoking Section

Sad to read, but from all posts and stories in papers and on the net a coming of time. All be it a sad coming of time. I too enjoy reading your stories of your travels. Being a travelor for work, ( I travel all over by plane) I too find that smoking and the allowance of such is diminishing...

    TAD

I made a purchase recently from a fellow smoker. In that bunch I got 8oz of Brown Irish rope and 6oz of Black Irish rope. I'm smoking a bowl of straight Brown and wow. Now I know why most mix it with other blends. The Nic hit is great, almost overwelming. At least this first bowl is. I'm loving...

    PAD...and disappointment..

I'm with everyone else, I would talk to the vendor. Any reputable one will be more than willing to sort it out in a way that will satisfy you. I'm sure that it was something to do with a bad finish as it shouldn't have bubbled or discolored.

I've made a huge mistake (maybe).

In a cooler area is the key. What type of wood the box is doesn't matter when they are in jars or tins...... I'd not worry, I doubt that you ruined anything. I don't however understand the jar lids coming loose. Mine have done the opposite in fact and have actually pulled down and sealed the...

    Parts for a tamper

I started out using stainless steel bolts and rounded them on a grinder. Then finish them by sanding with fine grade sandpaper. Of course then I buff them to a mirror finish. I also make some out of aluminum on the lathe now! Lots of ways you can make the end for tampers.

    My own Heavy Metal Collection!

James, I actually have 3 Kaywoodie metal pipes, all a bit different from each other. The other two are in the middle right of the first picture.

    My own Heavy Metal Collection!

I saw the post of the Heavy Metal collection and while moving my stuff into my newly finished (New) office/man cave came across a big number of my own Metal pipes. I do have a few more out in the shop, but this is the biggest part of what I've collected so far. Some I bought on Ebay, some at...

My first waxing, what do you think?

Great job on the clean up and nice of you to help out a new smoker!

    Heavy Metal collection

Nice collection........ I see some there that I have. I got interested in pipes of metal a while back and have a small collection myself. I'll have to dig them all out when I get a chance.

How far down do you smoke?

All the way to a chalky ash and stir if I have too.

    bollocks

I had the same problem as you just recently. Went to Bestbuy and they wanted $54 for a universal. I bought one on Ebay for $7.95 shipping included.

    Second pipe carving, opinions welcome

I don't think that bending the stem will make any difference with the stem not lining up. In order to have the bend help, you'd have to bent it very close to the shank, and I don't think you can get it bent that close. Even if you did, you would most likely bend the tenon, which would then cause...

    Refurbishing old pipes...

ssjones, you are correct, it's not entirely how strong it is used ( I use mine full strength) but how long you leave it on. For the rims with tar buildup, I put it on thick, right from the bottle. Q-tips are best for this. I leave it set for a few minutes and then with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol...

    Second pipe carving, opinions welcome

To keep the top intact the first important step is too make sure and remove all the bark from the plateaux. This can be accomplished with a soft wire brush, or light touch with a brass wire wheel. Then I do a couple different types of things with mine. You can stain it a darker color than the...

    Refurbishing old pipes...

Another thing a person should think about if restoring pipes is a bottle of Murphy's Oil Soap. It works wonders on removing tar build up on the rims and deep cleaning the rest of the pipe too. I use most of the tools that have already been listed and second lots of pipe cleaners and Q-tips. The...

Wood-working clubs in your area and pipe carve'in

Nothing like that around here. There are a lot of tools in a wood shop, especially someone elses, that isn't condusive to pipe making. $95 would go a long way toward making a purchase of your own equipment. Getting some time in someone elses shop may help you get some ideas of what equipment...

Anyone else going back to school tomorrow?

Life is my school, as I learn something new every day. And I can smoke where ever I wish! :)

    Richmond Pipe Show

Wonder how far from the show the airport is! I have a free round trip ticket that I need to use before Oct. 12th. I'm on the road and have been for almost two weeks and am actually in a hotel about 50 miles from there. But I fly home to St. Louis airport in the morning. I'll have to see how it...
