Certain bowl shapes for diff tobaccos?

It may be getting "too technical", but chamber diameter and depth mean little when the bowl has a sharp TAPER (bulldogs, Kirstens, etc.). Also, a tall, narrow "stack" will smoke/taste differently than a squatty pot, even tho' they have the same tobacco volume. Add these variables to the...

Electronics and Smoking = not good

I agree with igloo. Smoking in your computer room is not a problem. Dust (which in the home is made up mainly of sloughed off SKIN CELLS!) is what can build up inside a computer.

    Changing Times?

Yes, I agree with yoru and cornguy. I learned MANY years ago that smoking annoys some people and still today, I rarely smoke in the presence of others. It has become a solitary hobby of mine. Do all the smoking bans (so far) affect me DIRECTLY? No, because I probably wouldn't be smoking in a...

    Changing Times?

"Courtesy and civility", like charity, should come from the heart, not from the legislature. The situation is not just about smoke... it's about freedom, taxes, power, acceptance... and smokers are getting the short end of the stick in all of them.

    Changing Times?

When I was a boy, Texas and the South were still segregated. Not just the schools but also many businesses. With cafes and restaurants, the white folks used the front door and the black folks used the back door. There was usually a table or two set up in an unused corner of the kitchen for the...

    Need Help: Stubborn Tobacco

The hard pressed consistency sounds a lot like Dark Star, which I found impossible to rub out properly. I dumped some into an electric spice/coffee grinder and ground it up to a smokeable consistency. If yours is still too moist, it will dry out faster after being ground.

Where are all the Peter Stokkebye blends?

I know what you mean, Kevin. My "hoarding" consists of buying 4 oz. next time of a 2 oz. sample I liked. And just last year I reordered a certain P.S. flake that I loved, and the new batch tasted totally different!. "So many blends, so little time!" I'm afraid of stocking up on...

My discussion with a B&M owner.

theotherspace, It must be tough to be a pipe smoking college student today. :( OF COURSE you are encouraging people to smoke... PIPES. Not cigarettes. Not that "funny" stuff. Good tobacco in a good pipe. I don't know if the brain-washed massed can be persuaded that the health aspects are...

    Frog Morton...

I'm not much of an english fan, I guess. Only tried the first 2 Froggies when they came out. Ho hum. Most englishes taste the same to me EXCEPT for Penzance, which I easily choose over all the rest. It's like eating a piece of steak instead of drinking boullion.

    Stem won't budge now!

Long ago, I got in the habit of turning counterclockwise when removing a pipe stem. The old Grabows, etc. that had a threaded metal joint required that of course, and it seems to be a good habit to get into. I remove all my stems with a counterclockwise twist and put them back on with a...

    The Blandings Collection

A fun movie that I can enjoy even if only smoking a cob! :puffy: (It shows up on Turner Classic Movies occasionally.) That scene where Myrna Loy tells the contractor and painter the colors she wants the rooms painted always gets a guffaw out of me! (Because it's so true-to-life.)

    Sugar Barrel - Your thoughts?

Sugar Barrel had an icky aftertaste (like Granger and a few others) that I did not like. I threw the rest of the sample out.

    Absinthe

I agree with ted's take on what is legally being sold as absinthe now. I tried it a couple years ago, not knowing what to expect. Just once. I dislike the taste of licorice and that is what it tasted like to me. Vick's Nyquil? When I had my first taste of Southern Comfort, Nyquil instantly...

    Cleaning a clear lucite stem

Any idea what the proof is of that 'shine? I think they still sell "Georgia Moon" corn whiskey in the mason jars, but that is watered down to about 80 proof so it can be sold legally at liquor stores. I would recommend Everclear which is 190 proof grain alcohol. Save the 'shine for other...

    Anti-smoking forces mobilize in Alabama

This needs to be said more often, yoru... and in the MASS MEDIA.

How often do you smoke a pipe?

Nice setup, Lawrence. What's that big fan thing on the right?

    Cause of death: Tobacco

"Tobacco stash fell over and crushed the deceased person." Sounds like Fibber McGee's closet. He should have used his cellar like everybody else. "T'aint funny, McGee!"

At what point are you no long a "new member"

I noticed I just went over from a "Junior Member" to a "Member" with 100 posts. It took me a year to do that!

Teeth Clencher or Hand Holder/Straight or Bent

I clench... just hard enough to hold the pipe steady. Straights, "curved" and quarter bents. Full/half bents don't work in a recliner watching TV (and you can't get a cleaner down them). Regarding "rough teeth"... with age, the tips of my canine teeth are getting pitted. My dentist told me...

    What's for dinner Grand-Pa?

MY grandpa would call it SUPPER. Dinner is served at noon.
