Dad's method for Breaking in a New Pipe

I consider a pipe "broken in" when you can smoke leisurely all the way to the bottom without smelling/tasting wood burning, which is what happens with a new pipe. I do try to smoke to the bottom every time. Altho' there's little real "cake" in the heel, it does get charred somewhat and no more...

    Indoor Smoking

@ pipetrucker: Bravo! That's holding your ground against those fake cougher jerks. As for my house, my granddad smoked in it... my dad smoked in it... and by god, I will smoke in it. Only an occasional cigar leaves any odor the next day. (Used pipe cleaners are the biggest olfactory...

what to do with the alcohol after cleaning pipe?

I pour the Everclear up in a couple of small plastic pill bottles to dip the brush or pipe cleaner in. One is to clean the brushes in. I can't imagine either of these coming out clear. I dump them in the sink when finished. I also refrain from sucking off the dipped, used pipe cleaners.

How Many Pipes Do U Have?

I don't know for sure, and I'm too laxy to count them. 20 to 30 that I smoke, either occasionally or in the rotation. I have several more lying around in drawers that are lousy smokers or were my dad's pipes.

    Youngest Person Here?

    I'm 58 and I DON'T THINK I EVER WAS 17.

Do you smoke when you drive?

When alone and driving farther than an hour's distance, mainly on the open highway, YES, I smoke a pipe. I enjoy it and it keeps my mind working on those long stretches. I've never had a problem of dozing off while smoking. I have several "driving pipes" which are smaller the my usual indoor...

    Can we talk Navy Flake?

McClelland's Navy Cavendish is my favorite of those that have been mentioned. :puffy:

What do your friends and family think?

Most of my friends/family don't even know, or have never seen me smoke a pipe eventho' I've been doing it for 40 years! (Even my Facebook avatar is the silhouette of a man smoking a pipe that I "borrowed" from this site!) They HAVE seen me dipping the Skoal which I do most. Perhaps it stems...

    Burgers

I've never understood why anybody would watch Oprah. As for White Castle, true, they are not in Texas yet. But their belly bombers are in the frozen food section at H-E-B and other supermarkets. I can eat a box (6) for supper easily. Can't wait to see what they taste like at an...

    Burgers

portascat, As a native Texan, I don't know how you can mention Whataburger and Wendy's in the same sentence. (OK, in the same paragraph.) Wendy's is the only chain I avoid. Their dopy square patty hamburgers are tasteless and their chili is not worthy of that name, but is some kind of...

No Smoking Allowed at Just For Him - Not by Choice

“Of the $90,000 that was donated in support of the ordinance, only between $100 and $500 was raised locally, whereas ALL of the money raised for the opposition came from local support. The remainder of the money raised in support of Council Bill 2010-180 came from donations from the American...

What is a good English Blend to start out with?

Penzance. That is all ye need to know. I think of the years I wasted trying to find an English I really liked. :crying:

    The People Have Spoken: 148 – 2

That's good news, but it doesn't erase the smoking ban ordinance that was passed by nearly a 3 to 1 margin by the voters last November in my nearest city, San Angelo, Texas. :( There was less than a 20% voter turnout. The ordinance writers (cancer society, and local lickspittles) were...

    Breaking in a Pipe

Pipe smoking is an evolving hobby. What works best for YOU is the "right" way. :D With pre-carbonized bowls, I have taken up the advice of pipemaker Mark Tinsky, who told me to fill it up and smoke it. Slowly, of course... right down to the bottom. (That is important.) With non-carbonized, I...

    After a day of Antiquing...

I've never bought a new pipe rack. My half-dozen or so (mentally counting) all came from flea markets or antique shops and a couple of them are very nice, seemingly one-of-a-kind. Sometimes, they even come with a used pipe or two standing in them. I got one of my favorite smoking pipes (a...

    Leather wrapped pipes? Newbee question.

In the past, many meerschaums came wrapped in a tight leather glove. This was supposed to help with the coloring because it keeps your fingers off the pipe. That was the theory, but I've heard it doesn't work that well. I've always thought a leather covered billiard was the ultimate in...

    Pipe Accident !

I echo Tommy. We all know that pipe ashes/dottle don't effect the environment a whit if dumped on the roadway (provided they are OUT), but it doesn't look good to your fellow drivers/pedestrians. Dispose of them when nobody is looking. I was annoyed that my 2007 Trailblazer had no ashtray (or...

    when did you start smoking?

As a pre-schooler, I loved the smell of cigars (my dad smoked only cigarettes at the time). I KNEW that one day I would smoke cigars. It finally happened when I "liberated" a couple of King Edward Invincibles from an elderly uncle's box. I was about 12 then, and yes, I did the dirty deed...

    ashtrays

I do NOT dump ashes like my father did... hammering his pipes against whatever hard object was available... like a demented carpenter. I try to smoke down to an ash, then stir up the ashes with the scoop end of the pipe nail and VERY GENTLY tap... not the rim of the pipe, but the side of...
