There is no way I would waste my Lagavulin on cleaning a pipe, particularly when there are better substances available. For cleaning, I go to my liquor store and buy a bottle of straight grain alcohol; it's cheaper, and because of its high alcohol content, does a far better job of cleaning a pipe. If I want to pipe to have a bit of flavor afterwards, I have been known to dip the end of a pipe cleaner in some Irish whiskey and run that through, giving it plenty of time to dry. I don't know if the liquor laws in all states allow the purchase of grain alcohol, but here in Connecticut it's perfectly legal, and since the stuff is 95% pure alcohol, it's really the best thing for cleaning out a pipe. One bottle lasts a really long time.
after you've cleaned the pipe, fill it with your favorite tobacco, and now's the time to reach for the Lagavulin. 2 ounces will do nicely, light up, sit back, puff, sip, and relax.
