Like the OP, I really do like me some nice latakia. That said, IMHO if a blend is a lat bomb and is not balanced, the result may well be a not so satisfying smoke. I've matured into stout, but balanced English & Scottish blends. I'm more after taste & flavor more than raw latakia power.
Now...
Like some others here - maybe too many! Some 100 or so different blends. My den is more wide than deep.
I normally don't go more than 8 tins each of the ones I really like.
Go to the Dr. Grabow pipe forum and post the full pipe piox and the number on it. Bet you will get an answer shortly thereafter. Several of the guys there know the maker's history well.
Many English and Scottish blends will stay lit for nearly the entire bowl if sipped easily. Latakia is the tobacco that gives these the smoky taste and aroma. Latakia is one tobacco that many either like or dislike - not many in the middle. Personally, I prefer Latakia blends.
Also, don't get...
I am on the search for Virginias or Va-Pers that are smooth, not likely to bite with a good, strong flavor profile.
I really do like a good Virginia, but find every one I've sampled to be far too light for my taste.
As result, I prefer a stout English or similar offering with any or all of...
A few things are very likely to occur if any discontinued tobacco blends were resurrected - even if the exact original tobaccos & formulas were used.
First, many would swear that the old release was better and something has changed. Others would be convinced that the company was sold. and...
So, why has there not been an attempt to bring back a Syrian strain of latakia? It could be grown in other, more available regions.
I know that in the cigar world, many tobacco varietals are grown in regions away from the original. Now, there is likely no exact replacement for genuine Cuban...
Lots of different palates & preferences here!
For me, a good Scottish, stout English, are favored. Also enjoy Balkans & Orientals with a lighter emphasis on the oriental tobaccos. I prefer the Virginias, Latakia and Perique to shine a bit more. Also like the occasional inclusion of...
So, what kind of pipe smikers are you?
Do you prefer Straight Virginias, VAPers, VAOrs, Burleys, Balkans, Orientals, English, Scottish, Dark Fired, Lakelands, Aromatics, etc?
Or…do you swing every which way???
Do tell!
A few questons on the differences between these. First, the IV lists a run of 7500 tins. Is the V also limited to that low run?
jiminks described that close attention needed to be used here, as the two blends share much the same tobaccos and the tastes were apparently close at times. So, what...
Try a shape you like in a Rossi. If you like the pipe, save and get a Savanelli. Estates are good buys on SP - can get a Sav close to a Rossi price. Take a look at the lower end Neerups - thick walled, beefy pipes that smoke well.
Good luck!
