I am on the search for Virginias or Va-Pers that are smooth, not likely to bite with a good, strong flavor profile.
I really do like a good Virginia, but find every one I've sampled to be far too light for my taste.
As result, I prefer a stout English or similar offering with any or all of these tobaccos as part of the blend; latakia, perique, oriental, stoved virginia, etc.
Recommendations?

I am a huge fan of LJ Peretti's St. James Mixture. Go get you an ounce. I bet you will like it.

I find everything you are looking for in Royal Yacht. People seem to either love it or hate it, but ticks those boxes for me.
Does the most recent stuff taste...different to you?

Germain's Brown flake is a stout, earthy straight Virginia. It's hard to come by, though. Gawith's Westmorland Slices are a great Virginia but it does have toppings. I love the flavour but it isn't for everyone.

I don't know what Virginias you tried, but I've found British and German Virginia blends tend to have more body than what the US produces, at least up to a few years ago when I stopped buying. Try HU Director's Cut, 5th Anniversary, or Edward G, which also has some Burley and Kentucky as well as various G&H offerings.
Don't know if it's still being made, but I also liked Viprati for a US Va/Per/Bur with a little more body. You might also try some mature Red Virginia, Cringle Flake when it's around.

Make sure that you dry down the Virginia before smoking it or the extra moisture will mute the flavors.

To be honest, I first tried it in 2021 which I believe is after folks think it changed. Has been the same for me for my two years experience with it.
When Dunhill closed its doors there was an article about replacements that mentioned C&D dreams of Kaddath as a replacement for the Royal Yacht. I must say I like them both only having tasted the Peterson version but they are pretty different.
