Got Me a Big 'ol Marxman

I like big chunky pipes. So when I saw a Marxmen listed on ebay for $9.99 with free shipping I had to go for it. From the blurry, dim picture provided by seller it was really hard to tell the condition. As luck would have it (for a change) the pipe is in like-new condition except for the finish...

    Here's a Whitehall "Canadians"

jpmcwjr: I started scrubbing with Simple Green then switched to alcohol and a toothbrush. I ended up doing quite a bit of sanding followed the usual buffing and waxing.

    Here's a Whitehall "Canadians"

I saw this dirty old pipe on ebay and knew I'd be the only bidder. It actually looked worse when I got in front of me. I swear somebody covered it in shoe polish then buried it for several decades. Other than the dirt, I don't think it was ever smoked more than two or three times. It's nice...

Show Off Your LHS Pipes Here

Kinda of hard to score an LHS these days but I did get this little 5 panel Purex, even if it was (is) a little beat up. I sipped a little Orlik Golden Slice in it tonight and it was a very nice experiance.

    Briar Pipe price vs quality

There's already been plenty of expert answers to you question, but here is a picture that I think may add something. The pipe in the front is $120 Savinelli Venere and the one in the back is $50 Stanwell Brushed Black. They both smoke really well for me, but I pick up the Stanwell more often...

    Hialeah Antique Store Find

Tremendously improved! Looks like you'll enjoy that one for many years to come.

Show Off Your LHS Pipes Here

I was looking at this old LHS ad from 1946. It appears that the Purex Superfine models from that period were made from "domestic briar". It caused me to take a second look at the ones I have.

    Aromatic Haters Top 5 Aromatics

I don't smoke a lot of aros but I've been having an affair with Peter Stokkebyes's Sambuka this past week. Love that black licorice flavor.

    Duration of Smoke

Smoking a pipe while doing nothing else has strange time stretching properties. I'll come back into the house from my smoking room at night and find that everybody has long before gone to bed.Sometimes I can't believe that hours have gone by.

What the Antique Store Had for Me This Weekend

The last two or three trips I've made the shop has had mostly English made pipes. Hoping to find a Dunhill one of these days.

What the Antique Store Had for Me This Weekend

The pipes were six bucks each. I've scoped out 3 or 4 other local places. When I ask them about pipes they always look at me like I just asked for punch in the face. I'm glad I've got this one store that haves something for me just about every time I go in.

This Is Why Academic Intellectuals Generally Suck For The Most Part...

perdurabo surmised, I don't have to go there! It's always safer to back in time for examples so that we can distance our theories from current political controversies. How about eugenics? What could possibly go wrong if all you want to do is improve the human race? It had widespread academic...

What the Antique Store Had for Me This Weekend

Seems like there is always something there. Nothing great this time, just a trio of three English Mades. In the front is a Dulwich straight grain, a brand I had never heard of, but appears to be of good pedigree. The middle pipe a Duncan. This is the second one of those in my collection. It also...

    Constantly Betrayed by Drinkless

I'm also in the Cosmic camp. I've had pipes with no stingers that gurgled occasionally (one of my Petersons comes to mind) and plenty of pipes with stingers that never do. There do seem to be a lot of variables to account for moisture production and every pipe/tobacco/environment/smoker...

    "Who is John Galt?"

deathmetal opined: I agree with that. Subsidy systems also tend to inflate the costs of services and goods as well, which is usually why the subsidies are put in place. That supports another Ayn Rand claim that government is great at creating terrible solutions for problems it created or at...

    "Who is John Galt?"

I like a lot of what Ayn Rand proposed in objectivism and dismiss other parts. Her thoughts on the concept sacrifice are interesting, that no society can survive for long if they give up something more important for something less important. And I like that the idea that if we are empowered to...

GBD - A Few Catalogue Pages From Harrod's Circa 1895

I was interested to see the Morrel Mackenzie pipe on page 126. I have one stamped with that name, though I think it's not as old as that catalog.

    Yikes!! Sorry Norway.

Wow! There is no way those patient care areas would pass any kind of regulatory inspection here. So much wrong there. Here's a picture of a patient room at the hospital where I work in NW Portland. Far from free, this room will cost you $5000.00 a day =)
