Looking At A German "Hunter" Pipe On eBay

I dunno. With that short replacement stem your nose is going to be right over the bowl!

Dunhill My Mixture 965. Oh, My Goodness!

Whenever I read the rave reviews of MM 965 I feel a bit let down because my of experiance after buying a pound of it a year or so ago was awful. It had a distinct sour, ammonia smell that really put me off. I put it away for a few months but it still was unsmokable. At one point my wife even...

Estate Pipes Editorial - Feb 1946 (Pipe Lovers Magazine)

I enjoyed reading that. I can fully understand how someone might feel so attached to a pipe they'd rather have somebody throw it on their funeral pyre than give it away to a stranger. Thank goodness not everybody felt that way or we would have far few examples of pipe history than we do now in...

I believe the larger hole under the air hole is the trap, yes?

Show Off Your LHS Pipes Here

I'm happy to have snagged this little LHS Purex from ebay last week. It joins a similar carved one from 7 months ago. Also won an auction for what looks like a war time production Superfine. The pictures are terrible so I'll just have to wait and see.

My First "Made in Canada" Pipe

The bulldog smokes just fine. The other one has a tighter draw than I prefer because of the way the airway is drilled in the shank. It's at a pretty extreme angle and the tenon of the stem partially obscures the airway. I'm pretty sure I can fix that. I have to say, moisture has never been a...

My First "Made in Canada" Pipe

What looks like cork is actually a meerschaum plug. It's supposed to soak up the moisture from combustion.

My First "Made in Canada" Pipe

With the recent addition of my second Briarmeer pipe I'm officially a collector.

    Mark Twain Silver Dollar

The US Mint is offering a silver dollar featuring a portrait of Mark Twain complete with pipe! I just may have to order a silver proof of that one. (The gold is a little out of my range)

If You Like Burley... Could You Recommend Your Fav?

I like Peter Stokkebye's Burley 702 and could smoke that all day long. It's not all that exciting but it has a nutty, pleasant flavor. I try to keep my TAD costs down, so if I were spending more I might go with something more expensive. This stuff I can order by the pound and it blends very well...

Got this Certified Purex as a result of overcrowding at Dave G's LHS museum. It's a real pleasure to hold and to smoke. My crappy cell phone photography doesn't do Dave's work justice. The pipe just gleams and the grain is almost 3 dimensional. I just had to show it off.

Do tobaccos actually taste as described ??

Here's one observation I've made watching guys smoke a pipe for the first time, especially former cigar smokers. They tend to get the ember way too hot in an effort to generate as much "taste" as possible, sort of like taking a spoonful of ice cream instead of just putting a bit on the tongue...

    Pipe Identification Help

It seems many similar pipes were made in Italy. I've got one like yours. The "Wellpipes" found on ebay are copies of copies of Peterson's very popular design.

Got Me a Big 'ol Marxman

Dadgy, It does have one and I removed it as well. I keep it with the pipe in case I sell it someday....which isn't likely. The stinger looks like one of those Russian "onion dome" church spires.

    Pipes Made In Halves?!

I have Brebbia Iceberg Canadian where it's clear the shank was made in two parts. The joint is covered by rustication. I've never heard of a pipe being manufactured in two halves though. That would be interesting to see.

I really appreciate that information about dating. Now I know a bit more about this pipe: It does have the real briar root stamping. Also has "161" on the bottom.

Got Me a Big 'ol Marxman

dave g observed: I think this pipe would have been from Marxman's "Jumbo" line and retailed for $10.00. In today's money that's over $100.00. They also made a "400 Line" with 14k gold bands that went for considerably more.

In the Spirit of the Briar Brotherhood

My ninety-six year old father in law had a bride imported from the Philippines. She's sixty-five. Some of his daughters were scandalized and shocked, but I never saw them over at his place cooking for him. I think he did alright. If she can stand him for the next couple of years she will do...
