My guess: Lack of imagination, and lack of exploiting the newer plastic alternatives to the hard-rubber Vulcanite....the "traditional" stem material. I doubt I could be convinced that if you stuck an acrylic or Vulcanite stem in the mouth of some blindfolded guy, he'd be able to tell the...- sumusfumus

Just Tasted Latakia!
Try adding small amounts of blending Latakia to the HGL, or, mix the "mild" HGL with a stronger English blend. A small amount of the stronger English goes a long way, so go easy. Pipe Polishing and Care
Honestly.....I'd be very careful when using any kind of furniture/car waxes, rubbing oils, wood polishes on a briar pipe. These products are usually formulated with petroleum distillates that can outgas when the briar pipe is heated -from smoking- and can stink like kerosene, etc. Ditto...- sumusfumus

What's That Smell?
I was gifted a MM by a friend. Honestly, if it wasn't a gift, this would be the last choice of a pipe I would try, or, buy. I loaded it up, and smoked it. It smelled and tasted like warm lacquer thinner, and the stem, like nail-polish remover. I threw it into the garbage. No break-in...- sumusfumus
