Best Low Nic VAs, Not Flake

The first low-nic non-flake VAs that come to mind are G.L. Pease Montgomery, Peter Stokkebye Virginia Long Cut or C&D Briar Fox.

Essence of Vermont Review: 4Noggins blend

Nice review - thanks!. Another pipe tobacco to add to my list of ones I'd like to try.

    Stanwell pipes

Over the years I've added a number of Stanwells to my humble collection of pipes. They are terrific smokers. A bent billiard like a 139 shouldn't generally smoke hot. In my own experience, most pipes smoke hot if I'm puffing too fast or maybe packing the pipe too loosely. I haven't found the...

    Lane Ltd. LL7

For some reason, LL-7 was discontinued a couple years ago but has made a comeback. I really like it - it's a terrific soft aromatic. I find it similar to Pipesandcigars Trout Stream with a bit more vanilla. Great first thing in the AM & a good all-day tobacco.

What is the Best Cherry Tobacco You Have Smoked?

The best cherry pipe tobacco is the one you enjoy the most. If I were to guess, I'd guess that cherry aromatics are just behind vanilla ones in terms of numbers of blends. Take a chance & give a few of them a try. G&H Top Black Cherry, MacBaren 7 Seas Red, and CAO Cherry Bomb are ones I see...

John Middleton 'Carter Hall' Pipe Tobacco

There's nothing like a good old fashioned basic burley blend. Tastes great, smells great, burns great. Good alone or as a blender. Hmmmmmm - maybe I better buy another tub.

    VaBur Suggestions

My top VaBur recommendation: Reiner Long Golden Flake. It's pricey and there's also a hint of perique, but it's fabulous. I'd also consider Gawith & Hoggarth Brown Flake Unscented and MacBaren Burley London Blend

    Vermont Meat Candy

I bought some just because of the name. I actually don't get much maple/bacon in either the pouch or after lighting up. I'm taste bud challenged so I'm not very good at picking out particular flavors unless they're really strong. I like the taste of Vermont Meat Candy and don't get any ashy...

Tip On Making the Tobacco You Don't (Can't) Smoke Smokable

[Russ Ouelette (Hearth & Home for P&C) also makes a number of great aromatics as well. P&C's Butternut Burley is nice too.] Absolutely - forgot about those. While I don't think it's one of Russ' blends, P&C Trout Stream is another favorite.

Tip On Making the Tobacco You Don't (Can't) Smoke Smokable

I started out my pipe smoking days with aromatics many, many years ago and still enjoy them regularly (but not solely) today. Sounds like you have a solution to your problem - adding a sweet aromatic to tobaccos that aren't so good. If you like BCA, try 1Q & RLP-6 too. Or better yet, try the...

    Solani's Virginia Flake -633

Good stuff, isn't it! One of my favorite VaPers. Reminds me, I should buy more...

    Baccy Scale

Bought the 6 kg American Weigh Scale 8 years ago - it's been terrific. Been using it for blending lately. Thanks for your post - but I note that it's cheaper on eBay now then when I bought it.

    SG Best Brown

Sorry it didn't float your boat. For my personal taste, Gawith's Best Brown Flake is one of the most consistent straight Virginia pipe tobaccos I've tried. Hadn't had it in a few years - for a while it was darn near impossible to find. Then one day in August 2011, it showed up in stock at...

    Borkum Riff’s Bourbon Whiskey

Borkum Riff was a favorite of mine as a college student in the late 60"s. Haven't had it since. Haven't seen any really very good about the contemporary version but I can't help but be curious... Here's the problem - the enjoyment of any given pipe tobacco is fairly subjective. I've learned...

    Jarring in 1 oz. Quantities

I use the Kerr half-pint wide mouth jars. I buy them at the supermarket. Depending on the cut etc. & how tightly I choose to pack it, I can usually get 2 to 4 oz. of tobacco in one. They hold 1 oz. samples nicely with some room for air. There is an even smaller 4 oz. quilted jelly jar that...

    What Is Your Favorite Aromatic?

I have too many favorites aromatics to name 'em all, but I'd recommend almost anything from Uhles, LJ Peretti, Milan Tobacconists, pipeworks & wilke, or Boswell.

    MacBarren Burley

+1 A very nice Burley blend

Cellaring System - Small vs Large Jars

I personally only use the 1/2 pint Kerr wide-mouth canning jars. Easy to fill, stack well, and easy to fill your pipe from. I print a label for each jar using an ink-jet business card that I put along the inside of the jar as I fill it. The Kerr jars are clear, not quilted so the labels are...

A Good Bulk Virginia from SP

Haven't tried the Newminster but PS Virginia Long Cut is a nice mild easy smoking straight Virginia. And don't forget McClelland 5100!

    Ennerdale Flake

I really like Ennerdale Flake. I have to presume that many of the Lakeland tobaccos are "love 'em or leave 'em" baccys. If you like the taste, the underlying tobaccos used are absolutely fabulous. I would really like to have a men's cologne that smells like Ennerdale Flake - anyone know of one?
