Trying Latakia: Will The Third Time Be A Charm?

Here is my report on FMC: I understand why people love this, but it just isn't for me. Lovers of this blend should head over to the buy/trade/sell forum.

Finally! Found a Pipe For Capstan Blue

My first three smoking sessions with Capstan Blue were nice, but they did not quite live up to my expectations. Then I fired up some Capstan in a Savinelli bent dublin a little while ago, and it has been pretty blissful: sweet, biteless, with a bit of a nic hit. This pipe will be set aside for...

Anniversary Kake Has Me Confused About Perique.

This is on my list to try next. I love Old Gowrie, and for the same reasons I'm enjoying Anniversary Kake. I imagine this will be a winner for me as well.

Anniversary Kake Has Me Confused About Perique.

It's pretty awesome stuff, and I thank you for the recommendation, Roth.

Anniversary Kake Has Me Confused About Perique.

On the recommendation of several of you, I purchased and received Ross's AK from P&C. I absolutely love this stuff, but I confess I'm confused about the role the perique plays here. The description says the blend contains a "good amount" of perique, yet my experience with the blend is far...

    Suggestions On Packing Blackwoods Flake

Would there be any harm in giving it a few pulses in a coffee or spice grinder before letting it dry?

Thanks Peter. Your avatar is going to give me nightmares.

    Suggestions On Packing Blackwoods Flake

I'm enjoying this tobacco, but I suspect I could enjoy it more with a better pipe-loading technique. The tobacco is pretty thick and harder to rub out. It's moisture level also results in multiple relights for me. Any suggestions as to how I should be preparing this tobacco and loading it?

    The New Capstan Blue Flake

I doubt I'm packing my pipes with sufficient pressure. I pack until I have *some* resistance, but not as much as what Harris seems to be describing here. I've been having more dottle lately wit the blends that are not that dry.

Please Recommend Some *Sweet* (Less Hay-Like, Non-Aro) Virginias.

Harris, I purchased a tin of Capstan Blue after reading your review of it. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Indeed, it would be superb with some age on it. Thanks for taking the time to discuss it.

    OTC Tobaccos

Zekest is right. Your 'discount' cigarette stores usually carry the OTC blends.

Trying Latakia: Will The Third Time Be A Charm?

I'll certainly report back. And Roth, I no longer have the tin of FMOTT. I gave it to a buddy who I knew would love it. He's happy. So I'm happy. If all goes well with 'Cellar,' I might give a stronger blend a try. No hurry though. I've been enjoying my Virginias.

Trying Latakia: Will The Third Time Be A Charm?

I've given tobacco with latakia a try on two occasions. The first was FMOTT, the second was Nightcap. It just didn't work for me. Yet I'm compelled to give this leaf yet another try. While ordering some Anniversary Kake, I made an impulse buy and purchased a 50g tin of Frog Morton Cellar. I'll...

Hot Tea & A Pipe. A Good Match?

The Earl Grey I have now is a specialty blend that has a *lot* of bergamot. I may try adding some honey and see how it goes this time around. I like the idea of orange essence and honey. I'll give it a whirl and report back.

Hot Tea & A Pipe. A Good Match?

Pruss, I like your suggestions. Since I'm not wild about either honey or cream in my tea, I may try something with less tannin. One drink I do like with my pipes (which some might find odd) is diet tonic water (love the stuff) with a splash of cranberry juice. It brings out the sweetness of...

Hot Tea & A Pipe. A Good Match?

Not for me, sadly. Perhaps it is due to the astringent nature of the tea I like (e.g., Earl Grey), but hot tea usually leave my mouth very dry, and smoking only exacerbates matters. Has anyone had this same experience with this combination? And if so, have you found a way to remedy it...

For the Remainder of Your Life

Currently: Old Gowrie. It's mild, somewhat sweet, and has just the right amount of perique. Any more would be too much for my tender palate.

Please Recommend Some *Sweet* (Less Hay-Like, Non-Aro) Virginias.

Good catch, Peter. I suppose I should have said "Virginia forward blends."

OK. Just ordered some Capstan Blue and Blackwoods Flake. Look forward to trying them both.

    Balcones Single Malt Whiskey!

Not sure if anyone here has given a nod to this angelic beverage, but I think it's the best single malt I've had in this price range ($65-$70). The distillery is in Waco, TX (Sic 'em Bears!), and the whiskey (for me, at least) has all the best characteristics of a highland scotch and stateside...
