    That Old School Aroma

My uncle used to come and play cards with my Dad weekly and smoked Borkum Riff. I loved the smell of that tobacco though it wouldn't be my choice to smoke. Watching my Uncle enjoy his pipe is what started me on the journey. Made the house smell great (at least to me) for a few days

    Cadence

I let the heat of the pipe tell me if my cadence is too fast. If I feel the bowl temp start to ramp up I may even let the pipe go out and relight once it cools off. I do my best to keep the pipe just warm throughout the smoke. A hot smoke and good flavor don't match

    Favorite Virginia Tobaccos?

I am still trying to learn how to appreciate Virginias and started with Christmas Cheer which I like the best so far.

    Bent or Straight Stem?

My bents gurgle more and have found it to be especially so now that the weather is getting cooler. Keeps reminding me to smoke slower! Before buying a bent I always see if a pipe cleaner can be run easily down to the bowl, so I know there is a remedy if it starts to gurgle.

Are Small Bowl Briars Better for Heat and Humidity?

Dublins and bowls which narrow down from the top smoke hotter for me and require a more careful technique. Especially the bottom third of a smoke.

Taking a Few Days Off the Pipe

Moderation in anything is the key IMHO. Taking some time off occasionally also makes me look more forward to my next pipe....an usually it tastes even better.

    Thoughts On Rotation

I rotate only because I just enjoy looking and using all my pipes one at a time

    Rubber pipe bits

I use em on bits that I find difficult to clench, and remove after smoking. Never had an oxidation problem

    Mug Shots!

Ahhh.. vintage guitars and vintage tobacco. Nothing better!

    R. Wood Pipes - Any info?

    Need Advice on Smoking Virginias.

A beginner's attempt to enjoy straight Virginias. Need some advice! After a 40 year hiatus from the pipe, I'm back and smoking only Latakia blends as I've always had. I am trying to educate my palate into enjoying straight Virginias as I've always envied and was puzzled by the enthusiasm...

    Pipe Filters

I don't like filters. They always cause a moisture problem for me. Larry Roush told me to just use lots of pipe cleaners. lol

    Breaking In A New Pipe

Just load it and smoke it. I usually start with straight Virginias for the first 10 bowls. No prepping the bowl, just easy and slow smoking. For me its a neutral smoke before I decide if it will go into the Latakia rotation or something fairly aromatic like Frog Morton Cellar.

    Effect of Different Pipe Types

I find larger bowls loosely packed taste better with Latakia forward blends. My other favorite is orientals with which a smaller bowl seems preferable. Just my taste of course

Can I Use Open Tins for Storage or Move to Jars?

I use Brigham Crystal Jars in my tobacco cabinet where I store jars and opened tins. Keeps humidity at 70% in the cabinet and I monitor it with a hygrometer. The Brighams are not that expensive and can be reloaded with a humidifying liquid when necessary. This system works great for me...

    Age

In the 60s I started to enjoy the Tolkien books and thought I should smoke a pipe like his characters in the books. I was 14 and BS white was my first smoke. Good way to begin I guess

    American Pipes

Speaking of Mike Butera it reminds me how great smokers the pipes of Larry Roush are! I believe Mr. Butera was one of Larry's mentors. Roush pipes are of amazing workmanship and performance

I've got no Reason to Quit

Stopped smoking my beloved pipe about 40 years ago at the request of my wife and the oncoming of children. Now my children are grown and I'm going to enjoy what time is left and decided to go back to my pipe. Hoping the 40 year break will give me some extra time, so for now its all about...
