Help Me Identify This Castello Shape Number

Mike I think you may be right! Searching images the bowl looks like either a 33 or perhaps a 32 with a longer stem. I found this bit of wisdom at SP "While Castello does have a shape chart, one of the neat things about this great Italian marque is that said chart only covers the basic premise...

Help Me Identify This Castello Shape Number

Just received my third Castello and I'm relatively new to the brand after 20 years of mostly English briars. This compact billiard (KK) just seemed perfect for me. I prefer smaller pipes for Va's and VaPers. Since Castello stopped stamping shape numbers anyone know if this would have been a...

    Dunhill: Real or Fake?

Very true about billiard shaping. The taper and the slim proportions of 1960's and earlier Dunhills are almost a lost art. Very few of the new Dunhills have the shapes right to my eye.

    Krumble Kake Kraziness

We are living in a time of abundance in terms of blends and availability (at least in some markets like the US and Germany). So if you don't want to spend on this stuff you have many options. But because some of the types of leaf available to blenders has changed some older pipers have not been...

Opening Old Tins - A Photo and Data Thread

Great stuff! I have a few of these from around 2011 or 2012. Great to hear the seal held up and some of the moisture remained. I prefer BBF to FVF and may trade my FVF tins at some point.

Opening Old Tins - A Photo and Data Thread

I have 4 of these 100 gram HH Vintage Syrian tins from the same vintage. I used to smoke this regularly and these are my last four tins. The smell of this blend when you first open it is the closest I have ever come to reliving my father's Balkan Sobranie 759. You are right about the wine aroma...

Opening a ~40 year old tin of Assens' Finest Flake Cut + More Information sought

It looks a bit like Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake.

What, Currently, is Similar to Penzance?

Star of the East Flake from C&D is a good match. Might have more Latakia than Penzance but it comes close.

    HU director's Cut- a lament

In a blend like Solani 633 or similar VaPer the dark fired would be instantly detectable. So far in the blends I smoke I haven't come across it. However they could be reducing the amount of Perique. And we know they have varied the mix of red and orange Virginias.

    HU director's Cut- a lament

This is interesting to me because K&K uses Perique in many blends and I was not aware that there was any shortage of Perique, at least at the large houses that buy from St James Parish.

***What Are You Smoking, June 2023?***

10 year-old Penzance in a Brebbia slim billiard "Serie 1960" that I bought at the old Barclay Rex shop on Lexington Avenue in New York City. I also bought the Penzance at Barclay Rex at their other shop on 42nd Street (both shops now closed). I remember walking into the shop and spotting the...

    Concern, Dental-wise, About Clenching

Also, most good retailers list the weight of pipes for sale. Get a feel for what is good for you. I love small and slim pipes so weight is never an issue for me.

    Concern, Dental-wise, About Clenching

I agree with this. Been piping since 2009. I have experienced teeth shifting over time. I no longer clench and instead hold straight pipes. Full bent pipes distribute the weight differently so I do clench those for very short periods, if I need to do something with my hands for example. Most...

Dating Tins: Know Your Tin Types!

NOT from the late 90's. Don't fall for it. This is BS as far as tin dating. https://tinbids.com/auction/20897/

How to Date Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug, Old & New

I believe the older tins have the distributor listed as XYZ not Arango.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture from 2010 (super smooth and mellow, with a bit of spice on the finish) in a BBB 307S bent billiard with saddle stem. I had Tim West make me a new stem for this pipe after the original vulcanite developed a hole where I jabbed a pipe cleaner through too many times...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

Sillem's Councilor Flake in an Ashton pebble grain billiard. Do not sleep on Sillem's Councilor Flake. If you can't get your hands on Solani 633 this is a very close substitute. It may in fact be the same thing. Both made by K&K. Both are VaPers with a wonderful rich sweetness. Beautiful flakes...

    Astleys 44 & 109 - Production Foulup?

From memory of a tin from 5 or 6 years ago 109 is basically Marlin Flake. If not the same then very close.

    Esoterica Tilbury

Haven't had it in about 10 years but I recall a fine cut ribbon (almost shag) and a nicotine hit that was robust. Nice flavor though.
