That's a really cool looking "rustication". My guess is that it was created using a special made tool, like a brad point bit with the centre spike ground away.- tozert

The infamous 55
Tilbury is my favourite, too. If you can find it, you must try JF Germain's Old Brown Sliced. It tastes very similar to Tilbury but a little darker in colour and in flake form. I'm guessing its like how Germain's produces both Stonehaven and Rich Dark Flake...almost the same, but not. Tilbury... -

Vintage Meer Needing Some TLC.
I think the silver band may have been part of a repair job to reinforce the original, crumbly shoulder. Cortez is correct with the repair procedure. The cake will have to be sanded away, and the crumbly shoulder strengthened with a "cap" of new material. The screw tenon also looks like a repair...- tozert
