When Mad Men was running, didn't the pipesmoking character come here to check out advice? Seems like I remember something along those lines. I will bet that because there are just so many more series and historical movies being made now where characters are constantly smoking pipes on camera, that we also get a lot of people checking out this site to see if there is anything a pipesmoking character would need to know or do.
Who knows, we may have been answering questions from Robert Downey Jr, before he filmed the Sherlock movies.

It's the bad language used out of context or in unnecessary excess that often drives me away from a forum. It seems the "F" word has replaced "umm" in some people's vocabulary ("I went to the EFFIN store to pick up some EFFIN milk and the EFFIN cashier....." you get the idea).

I had an old English master at school who said the anglo saxon vernacular was fine when used as an exclamation mark. The problem is people who use it as a comma.

Well that, and I suffer from a malady that can't abide Stupid people... :)

With the exception of very few, most members have a good command of the English language or at least give it the "Old College Try".

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and often use a "shit, damn hell" etc. where appropriate, but only if I feel it is an enhancement to a point or somehow relevant to the discussion.

Good god we’re not in Sunday school. When someone says a curse word do you blush?

Lots of great answers and opinions. I believe the amount of moderation is one of the key reasons this place does so well. Kevin keeps the politics and religion strictly where is belongs, not on the site in any shape or form. I come here to talk about pipes and tobacco and that is what most threads provide. A certain amount of foul language is allowed if it fits the discussion. If it doesn't then it gets canned and the user gets a talking to.

The knowledge on this site is second to none. There are guys here with PHD's in certain pipe subjects. Jesse, George, Jiminks, jguss,Daveinlx, pipestud, and lots of others. I believe that the advertisers are a huge part of the success. They get involved, they answer questions when no one ese has a clue. Being able to ask Russ and GL Pease about certain blends is just one example as you won't get that on many sites.

I also believe that Kevin's tolerance level of guys trying to have some fun is at the perfect level. Being mean and nasty to people will get you in the penalty box real quick. This place is supposed to be where new and old can hang out, get questions answered no matter how many times they have been asked and not feel less than for asking them.

We were all new at some point and I know for myself when I started here, people answered my questions with good nature and were not condescending or rude. I also believe I can always learn something new here no matter how long I have been here. This site has made my enjoyment of my pipes and tobacco greater because I am a member here. Sometimes life kicks you right in the teeth and because of this site, the pain is not nearly as bad as it could be. I will always be grateful for that fact.

This is brilliant and could even be required reading for new (and not so new) members. Thanks so much for this thoughtful post!

Definitely not a San Fran thing. ?

I just threw out some nonsensical thing there to get people to think "WTF?".
“San Fran”?!!! Now those are words that can incite furor, especially among those native to San Francisco (there are two left I believe). “Frisco” might put you in the penalty box here as well for some.

Actually, it doesn’t matter what anyone calls it. We are very tolerant here in San Francisco and welcome anyone. Anyone, of course, who can pay $4500 a month in rent, that is!

Just a footnote: Being a good moderator, like being a good cop, requires attributes way above their pay grade. It's a kind of rare gift. Some have it, most don't. It's having more interest in people than in power, and yet having authority when it's needed.

My biggest issue with the ignore function, is that if someone is actively bashing me over and over on threads. In my experience, ignoring them just makes threads confusing, because I see everyone responding to things I DON'T see. I was ignoring a guy who had "followed" me, and when I would post, people after me would be saying things that made no sense at all to me.

So, IMO, the ignore function might just work if someone is being a jerk in general, but without a moderator cleaning up someone constantly attacking you, ignoring them just makes you look clueless. And, as we know, our mods are great, but they can't be everywhere all the time.
I agree. It also sucks cause you can’t see any threads that individual posts. So let’s say that you like posting in the What Are You Listening To (WAYLT) thread but it’s the same person that starts that thread each month, than you are not able to post in that thread.

Disclaimer - This is just an example and by no means am I dissing whoever starts that thread each month. I really don’t have anyone I want to ignore to be honest, I just experimented with it once, it’s good to experiment in life, ya know.

Ok...sure. We know you have a long-standing grudge against Philo.
Hahaha... is he the one that starts it each month? I honestly don’t know, I just know avatars for the most part... that is why, ladies & gentleman, you should never change your avatar! No matter how lame it is! Sure you all get sick of seeing mine but you know it, I’ve been using it going on 5 years now.

For the record, I know I am ignored by at least one member here, for the life of me, I don’t know what I did to hurt his precious feelings.

To the point of this thread, I do think the radio show brings in its fair share of members... I’m pretty sure that’s why I signed up... I can’t remember, I’ve slept since then.
