I can only speak for myself but...I had dual citizenship (membership here and on another site). After one of the admins on the other site yelled (typed in all caps) at me and used some unpleasant terms with regards to the size of the pictures I had posted I left there and never looked back. Either figure out to limit picture size posting in the first place so large images can't be posted or simply PM the member and let them know they should post smaller images in the future. Public beratement and a childish tantrum for breaking of a non-existant (or unknown) rule is unnecessary.
We need to start debating which lighter works best with certain blends.
This was a big reason for me and the members here good folks.

Google. All pipe related questions lead to this forum. And members are relatively friendly.
I know it's the people here, and the personalities to be found here. As others have mentioned, the first to show up on Google when searching for pipe information. Then the searcher finds the information they were in search of, while also getting a laugh. Such a diverse group of individuals here, there is a personality for everyone to relate to on this forum. By nature we all want to fit and this site is welcoming to others.
Also despite, a bland color theme, the site is modern compared to a lot of forums, good SEO, closely designed to popular social media sites which again, makes it familiar to others, well managed by mods, advertising that's not in your face, rules that aren't completely suffocating of enjoyment.
Not to mention a vast wealth of information.
I think people find the forum seeking information, then stay for the people.

You should have seen it immediately after the upgrade...it was anything but bland...my retinas are still burning from trying to look directly at it.
Kevin pays me $50 to post here and not on other pipe sites. Hey, times are tough and every penny counts.
I stay here because it's the only channel I get clear without putting foil on the antenna.
This site's a good information source for new smokers and other sites are good for casual conversation among the pipe veterans.

This place has allowed me to be here for a couple of years so it can't be all that. LOL. The people here are nice, lots of experience and knowledge and it's still run. Good formula for success.
In the last year I've seen few fights, and when there is disagreement, members seem to walk away rather than indulge in arrogant assertions about being right. The dialog is remarkably civil.
The BROBS fiasco has a worldwide following, that's my theory.
All I can say is that I just...like it better here. The atmosphere and company are better, the quality of information is better, and it’s just a better place to look for answers and hang out in.
