The things I miss most about working construction are the camaraderie, joking, and ribbing that goes on. Teaching is different. You rarely get to interact with colleagues much, and my bladesmithing is pretty solitary, too. This place kind of reminds me of my old construction days, because we can have conversations, give each other a hard time, joke around, laugh at each other, and also see what everyone else is smoking.

The jobsite can be a rough place.. But a place of great friendships. I also miss the camaraderie of that kind of work.

After returning to pipe smoking this year, this was the first site that I stumbled upon when I searched pipe smoking info via google. This is the only forum where I am a member and check out on a daily basis. In fact, this is my first foray into any Internet forum. This place is helpful, at times amusing and has really expanded my understanding (and consumption) of tobacco blends and pipes.

That reminds me, I really need to go visit pipe smokers den. I really like that one. I was very loyal to my first forum that I joined which was pipe smokers unlimited, haven’t been there in a year or two but it is slowly fizzling out. Not much action there at all.

Kevin is a marketing genius.
There's probably some luck but this site has been very attractive for a long time, once you reach critical mass it's just a snowball rolling down the mountain.

Some other pipe forums, and the reddit pipe smoker groups, are full of younger folk who got into pipes through the LOTR series and only smoke out of the sort of churchwardens that are seen in those movies.
...

Sounds like I belong on Reddit, that describes me to a T, or at least that was my intention when I started.
Problem is the technical conversations around here are too interesting.
The Pipes Magazine Radio Show is an amazing resource, actually getting to hear the voices of legends.
I haven't listened to the Radio Show recently but the topics are always interesting, back in 2014/2015 I made it through over 100 episodes and it was always a blast.

If anyone is at all interested in the Pipe Industry make sure you go back and listen to EVERY episode of the Pipes Magazine Radio Show.

temperance / moderation or self-restraint in action, statement, etc.; self-control. habitual moderation in the indulgence of a natural appetite or passion,

which is part of how you master smoking a pipe.

I started out here with a critical attitude toward what appeared to me to be easily researched and searchable questions....I became more tolerant of this willful ineptitude sometimes expressed here because of the rules against negativity. ( I actually thought some of these questions were a 'put on', they seemed so silly )

My biggest issue with the ignore function, is that if someone is actively bashing me over and over on threads. In my experience, ignoring them just makes threads confusing, because I see everyone responding to things I DON'T see. I was ignoring a guy who had "followed" me, and when I would post, people after me would be saying things that made no sense at all to me.

So, IMO, the ignore function might just work if someone is being a jerk in general, but without a moderator cleaning up someone constantly attacking you, ignoring them just makes you look clueless. And, as we know, our mods are great, but they can't be everywhere all the time.

Also, if someone takes something you have posted wrongly or if I was at fault. If they ignore me, I cannot apologize or better explain myself to alleviate any misconceptions. As it also blocks messages. This also has happened to me, ha ha. You're thinking, "No way Cosmic, you're such a nice guy." But, yes, yes, I am often misconstrued, and maybe stepping over the line a tad myself, ha ha. Usually something that a simple PM'd apology or explanation would fix... unless they are just a butthurt dumba$$, ha ha. puffy

Oh that’s easy. This site is the perfect Molotov cocktail of Your craziness. Condorlovers inappropriateness. Jgusses ocd research chops. Brobs rudeness (though Hoosier, cosmic, and more recently Highway step up when he is MIA). Ben88s peddling. Americamans pipe porn...and most importantly mso’s endless wisdom

^^ NAILED IT!!!! ^^ puffy

I'm a new member here and what drew me to this site was the active discussion going on here and friendly atmosphere. Being the first site in Google results certainly helps. I like that people here can disagree without profanities and insults. The lack of downvoting function also prevents this from turning into a circle jerk like Reddit where only one opinion is the correct one.

True. There is a newer pipe forum I’ve been on a few times and it’s a lot of beginners (not to mention a ridiculous amount of bad language and political posts). The level of knowledge and atmosphere on here is the best.

It's the bad language used out of context or in unnecessary excess that often drives me away from a forum. It seems the "F" word has replaced "umm" in some people's vocabulary ("I went to the EFFIN store to pick up some EFFIN milk and the EFFIN cashier....." you get the idea). Well that, and I suffer from a malady that can't abide Stupid people... :)

With the exception of very few, most members have a good command of the English language or at least give it the "Old College Try".

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and often use a "shit, damn hell" etc. where appropriate, but only if I feel it is an enhancement to a point or somehow relevant to the discussion.

I think that it's partially because pipemagazine.com has been around since 2009 and it built a solid following based on it's content outside of the forum. Adding the podcast around 2012 only added to the success.

So the answer is: Kevin.
