If you are smoking everywhere, what seperates you as a pipe smoker from a neurotic addicted cigarette smoker? If given the chance, I'd smoke in the office. Laws restrict that. In fact, in the Netherlands smoking is prohibited in public places, pubs/bars, restaurants, etc. Only in the comfort of my home, my wife allows it. And that's an encouraging thought.

I have to admit that I think it would be delightful to travel back in time for a few weeks to the 1950s - 1970s to relive the “smoke anywhere, anytime you please” mentality of those times….. especially at my age now as a grey bearded curmudgeon.

Yet, in the current time, smoking my pipes outdoors or at home feels more appropriate. I would dislike smoking to be the norm in restaurants these days, but in many ways I think smoking in “non-food serving” bars would be appropriate in the modern era.

In my opinion, I believe that a sizable amount of the dismay/dislike of smoking indoors is very much related to the lower rates of ventilation in indoor spaces that began especially in the late 70s and early 80s which saw houses and other buildings become much “tighter” in terms of air exchange/flow to improve energy efficiency. Prior to these energy conserving measures, smoking indoors seemed less likely to rile folks up as much.
I got a taste of what it was like in the 50’s about 10 years ago. I was in a hotel in Tanger Morocco which was pretty “3rd world” at the time. The hotel was halfway decent, and I smoked cigars at the time. Smoking was permitted everywhere including in the lobby. I had two leather cases of various cigars in the breast pockets of my jacket at all times. It was extremely relaxing and fun to smoke so freely and leisurely. It certainly made me feel like I was living in a different, more romantic era.

I smoke in a man-cave and the only thing smoked in there is pipe tobacco. Some are slightly aromatic like G&H Rum Flake, Bob's Chocolate Flake, Stonehaven, 3P's, Pegasus and Crooner. The rest are non aromatic mostly burley blends.

I love the smell of my man cave. puffy
I really need to get one of these 'man caves' everyone is on about.?

Well, I would have to say neurosis and cigarettes, obviously.

I smoke in the house, and since I’m a one or two bowl a day guy there doesn’t seem to be any lingering odor. Occasionally I will smoke at my folks’ place, they both enjoy the smell of what my dad refers to as a “third party tobacco”.

The only upside for me about lifting the public smoking restrictions would be the ease of organizing pipe and cigar club venues.

I prefer to smoke outside. I like having a view along with my coffee and pipe, and it feels…more like an event or ceremony rather than just something mundane to take for granted.

Anyone who enters my home knows the are going to be sucking down lots of second hand smoke. I do try to accommodate them so I will smoke Cult Blood Red Moon and Sutliff Molto Dolce and no one complains. Most people love the smell. If they don't like the smoke, they know better than to enter my house. If if they ever entered my house and complained, I would tell them to piss off. If my mother can enjoy the smell then that is all that matters. Keeping my mom happy is all that counts. Her father was a pipe smoker and she misses the smells. She really likes the 2 blends I smoke around her. My oldest daughter will complain a bit and I just tell her there's the door princess. I remind her she has 2 dogs and a cat so shut the fuck up. All my friends are either pipe or cigar guys and they have never complained. I smoke in my living room, my bedroom, in the kitchen if I am cooking. Everywhere and anywhere. My house my rules, don't like it, there's the door.

Australia has had very strict Indoors No Smoking Laws for many years. You are allowed to smoke in outdoor designated areas (in pubs and bars), but those tend to be dominated by cigarette smokers. I avoid those like the plague. A few good rooftop cigar bars exist, but they tend to be expensive and "exclusive". I'm not sure if that's my scene either.

Thankfully there are cigar bars and bars in hotels overseas (Asia, mainly) where you are still able to smoke indoors. But unfortunately legislation is moving against those and they are becoming less by the month.

Enjoy while you still able to.
This sounds encouraging, can you tell where the good rooftop cigar bars are in Sydney?

I don't frequent any in Sydney - preferring to smoke at home.
I do attend the occasional cigar evenings and annual cigar dinner at a club, which is members only.
There are a few rooftop cigar bars in Melbourne. The Siglo Bar in Spring Street opposite the Parliament House is probably the best known.

I don't smoke indoors or in my car because of the residual scent that lingers. I love the smell of pipe smoke, fresh-cut lumber, hay, and a good sage smudging-but not all the time. So, regardless of the public policy on smoking indoors, I'm ok with it. I'm sure to think differently when I move to an area with real winters; I can't imagine how I would smoke while snowing.

I smoke at home. I smoke at work. I smoke at the little neighborhood bar I hang out at. I like to tell the 20 and 30 something folks about how I used to go in the store and buy cigarettes for my dad...at age 5. They always say that is just crazy but it was indeed the way things used to be.

I remember those days. My next door neighbours had four daughters and would send any one of them to the store to get smokes.

I remember smoking on planes, buses, in the grocery stores etc. That seems a little crazy these days but it was normal.
I do miss being able to smoke indoors where it didn’t bother others.
We even had a smoking area when I was in High School.

Definitely I would. Big daddy government decided we are not allowed to be adults in the US, so we can't, in most places, unfortunately. When Americans became overgrown babies, letting the powers that be dictate what we can and can't do, we lost far more than we gained by not having a few cigarette butts laying around.
