I have yet to try any of the SG varietals. Which would you say are worth picking up, provided I can find them here in the US? I tend to lean towards VA and Mild English varieties.

I see! Carry on then, you won't get any obstruction from me. I advise you to buy 50 to 100 tins of Cabbie's Mixture, at least one out of five carries that GH scent that everybody talks about.

i actually dont like cabbie's that much. I much prefer St James Flake. I wish it was more peppery but it bites me i cant smoke it. I usually mix some FVF w a pinch of real st james perique instead. I wish they made a perique rope with a good portion of perique we could buy as a twist

I am truly surprised that nobody thinks there is a big difference in quality between the Gawiths and C&D, McClelland, all other tobaccos. It's like night and day to me.

I do - but I would exclude McClelland because they have some fine Orientals, skillfully blended, some with very unusual, delicate flavors. And I'd add Germain's which I'd rank above the Gawiths.

I think there is a big difference between the 2. G&H is an inferior product because everything they sell is tainted with the floral essence. Both C&D and McClelland produce consistent blends throughout their varied lines with no contamination from machines dating back to the 1800's.

But the blends arent supposed to not have it, even the unscented still use scenting

 Man are you listening to yourself? That's like saying unleaded gas still uses lead. If something is called unscented, that's what it should be. DUH

When it comes to GH, "unscented" should be preceded by "comparatively." It's just what they do. I'm guessing all their VA gets a light topping even before blending, then they add more for Ennerdale etc.

Chasingembers: I remember that stuff being a little floral, and as I'm a little sensitive (not in a bad way) to that aspect of tobacco, I notice when a product has even the lightest floral note. But, seeing as how at times we use "Lakeland" as a catch-all term whether it's in a blend or not (and I'd say I did that in this 2014 review), I will rewrite that description, which needs a little editing anyway.

I might have a ride over this summer and try to have an "unofficial look around"....it's only about 90 minutes from me.
What I fail to understand is why the tobacco industry in general is so secretive...........very few companies reply to questions, web sites give different info to the tins, which is different to the email reply when they do communicate......
I will be interested to see if GH are still using the 1800 steam press for much....and if they will let me have a quick look around.........

Has anyone else noticed a change in 1792 Flake since the merger? I've asked this over and over but got no response. Nobody smoked 1792 they bought from smokingpipes in the last 6 months? The topping is not as astringent, the flake smells and tastes like gingerbread. It's absolutely delicious, but I do miss the old 1792 with the veryn sweet tonquin.

I answered your question the last time you asked this. I had just finished up a tin of some 1792 Flake that I had purchased in 2010 and I immediate followed it by a box of 1792 that I purchased around the same time you had been spreading rumors that 1792 Flake had changed. 1792 has not changed at all since I started smoking it back in 2010, it tastes exactly the same to me.

I'm thinking you must have got some old stock. I've bought about 2 boxes and 4 tins in Feb and March last year and they were all identical and drastically different than 1792 had been previously. I'm waiting on the new stock to see whether it's going to stay like this

I agree mike and usually expect some variation but for the most part im pretty impressed at the consistency. I try to acquire fresh lbs though because I feel if they sit for too long they dry and lose their topping.
