Definitely right. But it's a miracle to me, that B&Ms often do not take advantage of their main strength against online sales, which is a solid man to man sales advice.
Indeed. Yup, it's better that they be honest and say they don't know, but to castigate the customer with 'look it up online before coming' is highly impertinent. I woulda replied to that jackanapes that if he's working in a tobacco shop, he has the obligation to know his wares, and that if anyone should be doing any research, online or in print, it's HIM!

Very few pet peeves since I've mostly become inured to many of the irritations mentioned above. I do get irked that nowhere in the chain of pipe information, except maybe occasionally on Forums, is any condensed, straightforward, non-commercial information offered to new smokers about filters -- the several kinds, the alternatives like adaptors, the possibility of not using them or adaptors at all, etc. I think many new pipe smokers buy pipes they may not later want, or be confused by stingers and the variety of filters. All this could be considerably clarified if not altogether explained in a few paragraphs. In fact, it is here and there, but not sufficiently to help most new or only occasional pipe smokers. Seems like needless stubborn misinformation by offering little or no information. Come on pipe makers and retailers, pipe clubs and shops. We can do a little better, eh? And yes, I do get tired of rattling on about it, but little is ever done.

That's basically what I tried to explain her as friendly as possible. It was not easy, both of us did not feel comfortable, but I even managed to make her look it up on the web.

The inability to enjoy such pleasurable recreations such as tobacco with some self control and dignity. If people didn't smoke 20 cigarettes a day, there probably wouldn't have to be warning labels on tobacco products.
Have you measured how much tobacco it takes to fill a cigarette versus a pipe chamber. 8-10 cigarettes will fit in a group 5-6 pipe.

OH, OH! ✋ I know this one! "There is approximately 1 gram of tobacco in a normal size Cigarette, slightly more in a 100."

As a bonus question: How many grams in a Robusto Cigar? The answer is 12 grams on average,

Do bear in mind that both cigar and cigarette tobacco is much dryer that pipe tobacco so that should be taken into consideration.

My average 2 grams = 2 cigarettes (but not inhaled) or 6 pipefuls for a single Robusto Cigar..

They're cigar guys by and large. They don't know details about pipe tobacco because few of the sales people actually smoke pipes. There are four decent B&Ms in Chicago area and all combined I've only met two sales people at them who smoked pipes and knew the tobacco. They easily had triple the number of staff who knew cigars.

My pet peeve is the general notion that “old men” smoke pipes...and I generally don’t like the association (even if positive?) of “my grandpa used to smoke a pipe”.
I’m not an old man...
The good part: I really don’t care. This is MY thing...and I enjoy it.

The funny thing is that they get reference information from the manufacturers. At least the local tobacconist does. The owner is knowledgeable in both pipes and cigars; the shop assistants moderately, but when I've asked about a blend they've pulled out plastified info sheets with all the details.

I hate pipe tobacco that gets worse with age. I have some Mississippi River special reserve that I really loved when I first started smoking it. I’ve kept it in a bale top jar for the last couple of years and it’s flavor has been reduced to hot air and cheap cigarettes. I keep it around thinking that maybe my palette was just off that day. In a few more years I may just throw it away.

Guilty.... maybe I'll change my ways
I'm guilty too, but I'm not gonna start spelling out things like Gawith and Hoggarth Kendal Black Cherry, Cornell and Diehl Star of the East Gold, J. F. Germain and Sons Royal Jersey Latakia Mixture, or Dunhill Standard Mixture Mellow (Scandinavian Tobacco Group version)? over and over, especially if I'm doing a comparison and I need to reference multiple blends multiple times. I do usually spell it out the first reference but then I switch over to acronyms... I figure this is a pipe place and most of you know what's up. Jargon and acronyms suck if you're an outsider but they really help the flow of conversation if you spend a lot of time talking about a given subject. I kind of like when I see one I don't instantly recognize and I have to look it up. Makes me feel like I'm becoming more knowledgeable in some small way, and I like that.

ctbill, the old man association with tobacco pipes is a mixed blessing. Though not related to pipes per se, the renowned singer/songwriter Tom Waits started talking and acting like an old guy when he was in his twenties, and not just an old guy, a poor down-and-out guy. His explanation was that the old guys got to wear all the cool hats. Experience and a kind of battered wisdom is not altogether unappealing, it seems.

To further clarify my “old man” reference:
I encourage “younger” folks to try pipe smoking, for the pure enjoyment. Slow down, sniff the world. A wide, deep hobby.
I would like the association with pipe smoking to be more contemplative and thoughtful, Not OLD...

Old, unless one is a complete fool to begin with, is contemplative and thoughtful. It might be that pipe smoking and old being associated isnt coincidence.
