It's gotten a bit too overboard, innit? Like, you can't whip out a churchwarden without people thinking 'hobbit', even though those pipes have been around since the 1600s and were once an emblem of the Hussars (of course, how many of the ones thinking 'hobbit' even know what a Hussar is, but anyway grmph...)

While I tend to agree, I also try to just lump all that kitsch together with things like CB/1Q and various other necessary evils that keep the industry alive... as a side note, a friend let me try a few of the Country Squire's Middle Earth series blends and they were all top quality leaf! Apparently that stuff outsells most everything we talk up on this forum. Felt kinda weird smoking something called "Bag End"?

Well, there's this: Latakia pronunciation

Me, I don't wanna sound even remotely Arabic, and it drives me up a wall when the T's are swallowed so lah-TAH-keah it remains.
I've heard that the t is pronounced like a d because in antiquity the place was called Laodicea. I've seen convincing arguments for the pronunciation lad•di•kia, but I have trouble making myself pronounce an a like ee.

Yup, it was Laodicea, which would be pronounced lao-dee-KEH-eah (as is Laotian); in both Green and Latin the C is pronounced like a K (the ch-ch-che-chi is a Mediaeval/post-Mediaeval development, which also drives me up a wall).

The swallowing of the T is an American English issue, though. I just find it grating. When I hear people say Toronoh I have to exert great restraint to keep me from trouting them whilst I yell repeatedly 'ToronTo!!! '
