I've heard that the t is pronounced like a d because in antiquity the place was called Laodicea. I've seen convincing arguments for the pronunciation lad•di•kia, but I have trouble making myself pronounce an a like ee.
Yup, it was Laodicea, which would be pronounced lao-dee-KEH-eah (as is
Laotian); in both Green and Latin the C is pronounced like a K (the ch-ch-che-chi is a Mediaeval/post-Mediaeval development, which also drives me up a wall).
The swallowing of the T is an American English issue, though. I just find it grating. When I hear people say
