Hi all!
I'm 32, from northeast Pa, and smoked my first pipe last week.
I am an avid cigar collector/smoker, and am really excited about my new hobby!
I am really looking forward to learning from you all.

Responding to a request for an introduction. This is the first forum I've been on for years (the only previous one was dedicated to a certain folk singer), but the pipe bug really bit me, possibly as an after-effect of quitting cigarettes about six months ago, although it's only now where pipes have become a serious vocation. I'm a writer and artist of dark fantasy, hold a couple of degrees in English from Oakland University in Michigan, where I've lived all my life, although I've visited a new other states and in the trip of my life, England. I've been a college instructor and library reference book editor, and until forced to retire because of disability, a public and private school teacher in Detroit. These days, I sit working on a novel, usually smoking a pipe, wondering about which is the "perfect" pipe, or at least the "right" one, and getting pipe accessories in addition to shopping about for pipes. That's about all in way of introduction. One question: what is a "shell" pipe? I see Dunhill makes a number of these, and they are very handsome pipes, but I'm not clear about what shell means.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

The "shell" is the finish of the pipe. It has been sand blasted and black/red stained.(I believe, someone will correct me if I am wrong). The "Tan Shell" has a light brown stain over the blasted surface. And, welcome to the forum. Ask away we are always happy to help.

To jqpiper,

I'm new here as well, and I thought I'd offer a few tips (as opposed to advice, which is dangerous to offer); if you're contemplating quitting smoking cigarettes, I succeeded after using the drug Chantex and eating a lot of Jolly Roger hard candies. This was after thirty years of smoking cigs. I don't miss them at all now. Pipe smoking is much different: it has a personal, even aesthetic, aspect to it. Smoking a pipe is an experience that takes longer than, say, a single cigarette, making it almost a meditative experience. As a writer, I've found pipe smoking while working on my writing a wonderful combination. One serious tip I can offer as a newcomer: nothing will switch you off faster from pipe smoking than a cheap pipe. They heat up too fast, can burn your fingers, and in general make the smoking experience more of an ordeal than a pleasant, relaxing experience. I think a good new pipe, even for starters, will set you back about $100 USD; the one exception I have is my LaRocca Piccola pocket pipe, which is smaller, obviously, but still set me back $45; ironically it is my favorite pipe until I can get my hands on a Dunhill.

Hey all, I'm Chris as my usernames makes obvious. I work in a B&M out on the west coast of Canada and thought I should try and not just lurk around and jump in. I'm amazed at the amount of information amassed on this site, this will definitely be a spot I'd consider sending newbies to for advice/help.
I'm glad our habit is alive in well online in communities such as this.

Hi there! Just picked up a pipe for the first time three weeks ago, and it's been a lot of fun getting started, thanks primarily to the dedicated pipers on forums like this one. Since starting, I've become particularly fond of pure Virginias like GL Pease's Union Square. It takes me back to my youth growing up in the Tobacco Belt and visiting the old tobacco warehouses, seeing and smelling the piles of cured leaf. I really appreciate all the sage advice and the wide range of opinions found here. I'll probably continue to hang around and only post on a limited basis while I get my feet underneath me in the hobby, but it's a good feeling being part of a community like this one.

Hey Guys,

I'm Bill, an English expat living, working and looking forward to retirement in Germany. I gave up all of the other ways of enjoying tobacco about three years ago and settled on my pipe. I am I suppose a bit of a traditionalist, I enjoy smoking flakes and twists and I am not a great fan of strong aromatic blends (with a few notable exceptions). I enjoy visiting the site and especially enjoy browsing through some of the threads in the forums. Smoking my pipe gives me great enjoyment especially at the end of the day; however I am sometimes bemused by the mystic which seems to surround the simple pleasure of smoking a pipe. I do not possess a huge collection of pipes in fact I generally take my favourite pipe and use it until I break it by sitting on the thing, or run it over with the lawn mower. I fill it up at least five times a day with whatever tobacco I fancy at the time, have never polished it and de-coke it when the walls of the bowl are nearly touching by scraping out the carbon with a screwdriver. Hope you will still let me join the club.

Bill

Terrygoldman123 - I grew up in Danville, Va., where we used to host the auctioneering world championships and the hometown radio station is still WBTM (for "World's Best Tobacco Market"). Driving through the warehouse district you could smell the tobacco sitting ready for auction, and we actually had a 4th-grade field trip to a warehouse where they gave us each a twisted leaf to take home as a souvenir. Different world then, some 35 years ago. Most of that industry has moved on, much like textiles. Sad, but some great memories for sure.

I've dabbled with a pipe for several years, but Ive been into Cigars for about 10 years. For some reasion the last few months I've switched totaly to my pipe, and I'm enjoying it more and more. I know Cigars pretty well, but I have a lot to learn about pipes, and pipe tobacco... but that is half the fun. Thanks, looking forward to chatting with yall.

Hello everyone, new member here introducing myself.
I live in Maryland and have smoked a pipe since 1999. Prefer VA and English, with a 80/20 preference. Currently have around seventy pipes and several pounds of tobacco in the cellar. Brands run all over the place from Tinsky, Dunhill, Sav, Charatan's Make, Ser Jac, house brands, and no names. I love them all. I have been lurking in the forum for a few months, and finally decided to introduce myself. I used to post to alt.smokers.pipes in the late 1990's and early 2000's, but stopped participating in forums and usenet years ago. Finally decided to join because my wife is sick of me talking about pipes with her. ;)

Hi, name is Patrick. I am brand new to this, so far, enjoyable hobby. I am fascinated with the aesthetics of pipe smoking. My experience is minimal having only smoked Prince Albert Cherry Vanilla out of a Dr. Grabow and pipe i made myself out of deer bone for reenactments of the mountain man era. I would appreciate some guidance in this area. I am attending college so I don't have much money to spend. However, I do want a new pipe. Pointers, advice, and random knowledge of the world of the pipe would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening - I'm David from Omaha. I previously worked in a tobacco/gift shop that specialized in premium cigars, pipes, and tobaccos. My pipe collection, about a dozen pipes in all, range from a gourd calabash to briar (Tim West, BC, Peterson, etc.). Currently my favorite tobaccos are Virginians, Latakia blends, and a few arromatics.
Thanks for reading....not a particularly exciting post.

Dave

Youngpipe93, welcome to the board. As far as a new pipe goes you're really going to get a lot of different advice. Some say save your money and get a "good" pipe and not waste money on a grabow, others will say get what you can afford just don't buy something that is crap. I myself like Dr Grabow, and have a couple pipes, and some Kaywoodies, and one Savinelli (my wife got it for me), they all smoke great and all vary in price. I would go with the second advice and get what you can afford, cobs are nice care for them they will last (I've had one for 8 years but I'm not a heavy smoker on it). Ebay is pretty decent on finding some great deals, just make sure they are in good shape and cleaned (if you don't want to do it). Don't pick something up that has a metal bowl inside of something that may be made of plastic (I've seen some like this and they want $15 plus for them). If your price range is 15-30 your local shop should have some nice basket pipes, I have bought a few that was unfinished and did the final sanding and polishing on them and love them (one I call my nose warmer).

Hope this helps and happy puffing.
Welcome to the fun grumpy!

Thanks jeepnewbie, I could easily spend around $100 on a new pipe but I do like a bargain and hate paying full price if I can help it.

Hi, everyone. Guess I forgot the intro part. My name is Brian and I'm a new pipe smoker in Wisconsin. I particularly have been enjoying darker cavendish tobacco. I've really enjoyed reading all the comments so far and look forward to getting to know you all better.
