To jqpiper,
I'm new here as well, and I thought I'd offer a few tips (as opposed to advice, which is dangerous to offer); if you're contemplating quitting smoking cigarettes, I succeeded after using the drug Chantex and eating a lot of Jolly Roger hard candies. This was after thirty years of smoking cigs. I don't miss them at all now. Pipe smoking is much different: it has a personal, even aesthetic, aspect to it. Smoking a pipe is an experience that takes longer than, say, a single cigarette, making it almost a meditative experience. As a writer, I've found pipe smoking while working on my writing a wonderful combination. One serious tip I can offer as a newcomer: nothing will switch you off faster from pipe smoking than a cheap pipe. They heat up too fast, can burn your fingers, and in general make the smoking experience more of an ordeal than a pleasant, relaxing experience. I think a good new pipe, even for starters, will set you back about $100 USD; the one exception I have is my LaRocca Piccola pocket pipe, which is smaller, obviously, but still set me back $45; ironically it is my favorite pipe until I can get my hands on a Dunhill.
