They appear to have been smoked very little and the stems show no chatter. These little beauties are amazingly light at 33 & 27g respectively. Stampings are very crisp as the pipes have had little to no buffing over the years.www.ebay.com

Based on the EIRE stamp this pipe likely dates from 1938-41. I’m not sure what I can say about this pipe that the pictures don’t already say. This is the only grade 5 I’ve ever seen and in a house pipe nonetheless.www.ebay.com
It certainly looks like there is. I suspect it was re-graded before being sent out of the factory due to fills.

A friend and old collector told me that there is a (lower) "B" grade that was sent to soldiers in the field.
Not Dunhill but at the time of the First World War, there were pipes stamped ‘S’ & sent to the front. S denoting service in the field or simply service. Think those particular pipes came from Allen & Wright.
I wasn't joking about "B" grades. Though the account in the pipedia page is rather contrary to my friend's assertion.
Coming back to correct my post, while it’s still on my mind. The pipes I was trying to remember were actually stamped AS for ‘active service’.
I wonder if the "A.S." was a point of advertising ("the lads at the front smoke them, so should you!"), or whether it was a call for family at home to have these smokers' goods forwarded to them at the front ("Note Name and Addresses"). Glad we've got one more "mysterious stamp" identified!
The allure of these was the savings on postage.
Both pipes appear to have been attacked by a demented mohel, so perhaps relief would be a good choice.

The pipe has been carefully maintained, so wear is pretty minimal, and it arrived in clean condition. I love it when the carving hasn't been softened up by the over application of a buffer.
