Blimey ! I'm appalled, how could I not have seen this. Or am I delusional ?
This is not a lovat, this is obviously Charatan's famous 090 Dublin shape. The most pure of all Dublin shapes and now with a lovat stem.
When you look at the pictures closely it shows that the stem is not in perfect alignment with the shank.
If I am wrong, let me stand corrected . If my notion is correct I hope the winner is happy with his pipe.

It's not that uncommon for an old pipe to develop a lack of flush fit between the shank and the stem. Wood shrinks slightly over the decades

So true Jesse, so true. I've seen many pipes with a tiny gap between the face of the shank and the stem.
Not yet a divorce, but a separation possibly due to a aprox. 8 % shrinkage of the briar.
But can brar shrink in circumference ?
Aside from al that , this is not a Dublin's stem .
In my trunk is a Charatan Super pipe, it is somewhat of an anomaly.
A lovat with a huge bowl, yet a lovat with a similar stem, the S logo faintly visible still.
Maybe my imagination gets the beter of me.

Absolutely. But it's not always a uniform amount of shrinkage. It depends on the orientation and density of grain, among other things. One of the things I learned from George Dibos is that mortises can go out of round over time because of the direction of shrinkage. In some cases it's enough to require George to re-round the mortise before fitting a pipe with a replacement stem.

Orlando, that was the reason why I thought so long whether to bid on the pipe or not. I then passed on it because I could not classify it clearly.I then passed on it because I could not classify it clearly. No doubt it is a pipe from the Reuben era.(as @kenbarnes said, Reuben always stamped the shape # close to fit ?). I also think the stem is original. The CP logo is still well readable. It is a Lovat with a Dublin bowl but I have not found the shape # 099 anywhere. As far as I know the Charatan's Dublins never start with a 0 in the shape code. You can find the 0 on Lumbermans (Canadians) and Lovats. Quite confusing the whole thing. ?

Hi Kottan,
Yes, this is Reuben era pipe and I love them ; shape nr. is close to the stem.
I'm not entirely sure if the Dublin shape nrs. never started with an 0 .
Is the stem per se original because it has CP logo , which makes it a Charatan one ?
This is by the way a 090, not a 099 :)
The Charatan Dublin is a shape 90 . Also 91 being a medium one ; also is the most beautiful bell dublin 33 .
I own a bell dublin deluxe with the shape nr. 90, or 090 and it does not look to be a topped dublin.
Lovat could be a shape 014 etc.

What struck me most is the Dublin bowl, a lovat is supposed to have a billiard one, not ?
I'm utterly confused, need coffee and breakfast :):coffee:

Sorry, "099" was a typo it should be "090".

Hi Orlando,
the term “Lovat" was used by the seller.

I think the correct description would have been “long shanked Dublin with a short saddle stem"

But that wouldn't solve our problem of the missing shape no. either. ?

There is simply too little literature from the Reuben era (1910-1962).

I would be interested in your Charatan Dublin with the 0 at the beginning of the shape code. Could you please post a picture of it?

Sure will Kottan, if I can retrieve it :)
Yes, it was the seller who described the pipe as being a lovat shape, not us.

Here's a curious one. I've never seen a Sasieni Cavalier shape. This one is shown as an Eight Dot, and the title says "More than Scarce", so probably true. The seller discloses and shows a photo of the repaired crack in the briar - but at the cavalier plug end. I suppose if not removed, it would hold up? $364, not cheap.

I enjoy collecting old Ben Wade pipes and I was observing this one below to see how high the auction would go:

I think that, for my tastes anyway, I find it difficult to muster enthusiasm for an old pipe like this if I know it has an "off" replacement stem (for example). I'm sort of a stickler for detail and the stem would be something of an eyesore. I think if I bought something like this it would have to factor in the cost of the eventual repair, so really I'd be paying for a stummel and the case.

I bring this up now because there's an ongoing auction for a similar pipe with a stem that very obviously doesn't match the pipe (i.e. not flush, not threaded) and the auction price is going significantly higher than I would have imagined. I wonder how many of the bidders realize it's not an original stem, and how many know and don't care or are planning to repair the pipe.

Exactly. I have my eye on the current one, knowing full well a new stem has to be cut. There is also a Loewe, based on the year, I have zero interest in, that’s going to need a new stem.

But to your point, does everyone know about these things?
