According to C&D, the Burley Flake Series has no toppings and are all natural. That said, I would recommend No 3 over No 5I have tried BF#5, it has a rum, maple and anise casing, it is not even close to HHBF.

I just remembered, is Amphora burley blend still available? It's DAMN close to burley flake. I'd almost bet that it's burley flake rubbed out...Pretty much just as the title says I am struggling to find a replacement for hh burley flake. I only managed to stash away 3 of the 100g tins so I am holding off on enjoying those for a while.
I like the role that dfk plays in hh bf and have yet to find anything else like it.
A little more info on my preference in this blend type to help with any suggestions I am a huge fan of cobblestone hiking (I am pretty sure also discontinued but not 100% on that).
You may be on to something here. I have never considered trying Amphora. Nothing against otc blends but never thought about it seriously. This does seem to fit the bill.I just remembered, is Amphora burley blend still available? It's DAMN close to burley flake. I'd almost bet that it's burley flake rubbed out...

Cased with flavorings or topped is all the same to me. If Burley Flake No 5 has flavoring that would explain why I don't like it. I know I read that No 1, 2 , and 3 are not flavored, and I doubt No 4 is.I never mentioned topping.
A statement I never thought to expect as I've always seen many consider C&D a burley house first, then everything else.Virginia and perique will continue to do fine with C&D but quality Balkans and innovative burleys... those are the blends that are looking to be damn sparse for the foreseeable future...

Pipes and Cigars has a full stock of John Cotton right now.Good luck getting your hands on some John Cotton’s. They are no more as well. That being said their double pressed burley just missed the mark for me. It was right up the alley of burley that I like but was a little bland and weak. I had to mix the last .5 oz of my tin with five brothers to get through it.
Redburn is nothing like HHBB but it’s delicious in its own rightHave you tried C&D Redburn? It's a crumble cake with Burley, Virginia, and Dark Fired. Has a "dark rum and molasses" topping according to the description. I remember liking that one a few years back.
I said cased with flavorings. Why are some people so quick to "correct" others. Sarcasm is not providing helpful information.99% of all pipe tobacco is cased, you must not like very many.
Yeah I'm not a huge burley guy either but I just mean that (from what I've seen/read) most people who are seem to either like flakes or codger style blends which seems to be alot of what Sutliff/MB had whereas I don't know any real C&D burley forward/only blends other than eight state. Most everything else I've seen from them is some blend containing at least perique and VA but that could be my lack of experience with their catalogue.A statement I never thought to expect as I've always seen many consider C&D a burley house first, then everything else.
I don't smoke burleys, so I don't have much of an opinion, but it's always been the sentiment I've had.

Okay Mr. Pip, I capitulate to your vast knowledge of tobacco processing. I had absolutely no idea that casing is applied to most pipe tobacco in order to smooth the smoke and enhance the natural flavor profile. I also had no idea that some casings are completely neutral, while others have flavorings like anise, maple, and chocolate. Thank you so much for your helpful and informative posts. Why are some people so slow to "understand".
