One of my estate pipes was my grandfather. My Aunt gave me two of his pipes at the family get-together after the funeral. I still have one - a Yello Bole Briar Spartan - and smoke it every now and then. The other was a Whitehall mini and I gave it to one of my sons. He smokes it when he has only has about 10 or 15 minutes for a bowl.

To each their own.
Me, I'm in this for the smoking experience, not the history. Plus, I have a preference for virgins
Not that I don't have interest in history, but it may be different with pipes - somebody could have died while smoking that one. So if you find yourself suddenly shy about smoking one that you thought would be super, perhaps it has a ghost (of a different nature than typical).

I have several estates. My treasure is a pipe a friend gave me before he died. I had no thoughts of not smoking it right away, and did. No cleaning, no Everclear, no nothing. Just put in tobacco and lit it up.
I now own three or four more historic old pipes. One is from an antique shop. Ran one Everclear through it, and filled it with tobacco.
The others have come from a reliable online retailer. Loaded them up and smoked them right out of the box.
Now, that's not for everyone, I realize. I'm an old pipesmoker. Got 40 years in. What works for me, might not work for you. That's fine. We both can enjoy our pipes, the new ones and the used ones.
One thing I have wondered, though, is if smoking an estate bothers you, you don't need to go to a tobacco barn to see tobacco leaves hanging over a wide variety of manure scraps scattered across a dirt floor. Just sayin'.

Phooey! I bid $50 on a Dunhill, and didn't meet the reserve. I just got the e-mail from eBay that it sold for $51.

Does a pipe which found it's way to "estate" status because it was a poor smoking pipe
I suppose it can happen if the pipe looks fairly unused, but an estate pipe that is obviously well-smoked with years if not decades of break-in on it, I hardly think so. I haven't yet had a single bad estate pipe, and if I got it at a good price, all the better. I like old things and it gives me great pleasure to take what might have been a lost, forgotten, neglected or even abandoned pipe from its prior owner get a whole new life, restored as new, and loved and cherished again to be allowed to continue to fulfill its maker's purpose!

My guess is "estate" is almost synonymous now with "pre-smoked", "used" or "second hand". Sounds a bit tonier, no? As used cars are now "Pre-owned".
Waaaay back in the day, rich folk in London and Paris might hire a bloke to break in his pipe. What a job! Cosmic would love it, as well as any who love the first taste of briar smoldering.

I can't believe that I have read every post on this thread. It has been a fun and thrilling journey. Also, I was inspired and just found another great estate pipe. A Kaywoodie flame grain in the rare small chub billiard (85) shape. It's like an old school devil anse. Looking forward to it coming in the mail.

So you are the guy! That was a nice one. Glad to see it landed in the neighborhood at least :)

Perception is a funny thing. Some see it as eating out of a garbage pail while others see a diamond in the ruff. I just finished cleaning and sanitizing an estate pipe from the early 70's. This was my first expedition into estate pipes and won't be my last. BTW, I'm smoking it now :)
