    Experimental Texture

I'm back! The banned life is a boring life. I've been writing lines, à la Harry Potter - "I will reduce the amplitude of my sarcasm." Hopefully I can stay for a while. Here's an experimental texture on a tiny pipe. I charred the surface with a small torch, applied black stain to even...

    Tobacco Taxes and Tariffs

I asked @Pastor Richard why tobacco prices were so high in Australia. His reply was interesting. Richard, will you repeat it please? And while we're at it, I'd love to hear from others who are experiencing punitive government actions regarding tobacco. I know about the US of A, obviously. And...

    What's in a Name?

I'm curious about the names and avatars in the forum. Please explain yours, if they're not obvious. My name refers to the fact that all my childhood memories of Dad include his pipes, and that I'm now a pipe smoker also. My avatar is just my ugly mug. And just for fun, I think that any...

Meer Liner Is In - Now What?

This no-name Canadian has been a good opportunity for skills development. It had a regular height bowl when I bought it, but the rim was cracked through in several places, so I tried to get past them with the belt sander. I had to stop once I'd achieved a pot profile. But there were still...

    What Kind of Filler?

I knew my little volcano had several fills but was surprised to discover they are alcohol soluble. They were all flush until I began staining. Any ideas what was used here? I can think of several fillers that would do the job, and favor CA with sanding dust, but what would you guys use here?

    Three Pipes

These pipes were bronated to my collection by my big brother, @Jerry144 The top came first, a no name. I sanded it down and stained it black. I love it. Smokes well, looks good. The larger middle pipe came next, a Savinelli. It's in line for a major refurb. It's probably my best smoker...

    Seniority!

I just noticed I'm now a senior member! Feels great! Do I get a bonus? Can I finally tell somebody what to do?

    Fuel Flavored Tobacco

I love my Zippo pipe lighter. It works better than any I've tried (which is not many). But I hate the flavor of the fuel. Even my most careful effort seems to saturate the pack with that awful twang. So I've stopped using the lighter. I'm taking it to my brother tomorrow to see whether he...

    Pipe Nail

Estate pipe nail for sale. $25 Two and one-half inches, large round head. This one is electro-galvanized, much better than the clunkier old school hot dip type. Using this nail with your pipe makes a statement. It tells observers something about you, something they need to know about you...

    What Makes a Good Club?

I've approached a local tobacconist about starting and/or sponsoring a club. I had a pleasant conversation with a pipe smoking employee who is going to run the idea up the pole. I'm going to meet him next Monday at one of their locations. I think it would help to prepare a one-page proposal...

    Square Bands, Caps

Does anyone know a source for square bands and caps? I'm pretty handy but don't think I could easily make one.

    Punto Oro 625 KS

Is it possible to put an approximate date on this? I will clean and polish it this weekend, and soak a little superglue into the backside of the small crack in the shank, visible in the closeup photo. Can that be the original stem, being smaller than the end of the shank?

    Captain? Frigate?

Why is @chasingembers called Captain of the Black Frigate in the spot where everyone else's member rank is posted?

    Better Micro Mesh?

For you more experienced restorers, is there a preferred micro mesh brand or type? I'm disappointed in the short life of the ones I purchased from Peachtree Woodworking. I've sanded two stems and one stummel, and they're worn out.

    Kitchen Sink

For Saturday lunch I often make my Kitchen Sink, which is a frying pan amalgamation of the week's leftovers. I add fresh meat, vegetables, or starches as needed, and alway a variety of spices. I love it. So today, being Saturday, I'm going to start a new Kitchen Sink using all the tobaccos...

    Getting to the First Page

Frustrated. I can't figure out how to get to the first page of a thread. I always arrive at the latest entry, then have to work backwards. Is that just the way it is?

    Deputy Lifts Car

Thank God for sheriff's deputy J. Holt of Gloucester, Virginia, and all public servant heroes like him, who yesterday lifted a car to free a trapped woman. I can only hope that I might display his determination and strength, should they ever be required of me for another's welfare. Our first...

    First Cob, First Filter

Smoked my first cob this morning (MM Legend), which came with a Dr G paper filter. The pipe is great, but my first experience with a filter was not. Didn't like the restrictive draw, the extra-cool smoke, and especially the reduction in flavor. I took it out. I'm smokey now!

    My First Stem Polish

Did this with micro mesh pads. I was pleased with how the brown tones gradually disappeared. Now I've learned there are also sticks, like emery boards. Those would have helped greatly on the underside of the bit.
