In praise of Dr Grabow pipes

After hearing so much praise for Dr Grabows, I bought a Viscount Pickax on Ebay. It's thin walled and, possibly because of the shape, the draw hole is way above the bottom of the bowl. I've smoked it only twice, so far. As I suspected when I saw it, it smokes hot. Hopefully it will improve as...

    Smoking and Walking

What a nice road for a walk; you your pipe and your thoughts. Where is it?

    What is Baccy

It's what Mammy Yokum would have called tobacco. For those who don't know who she is, do a Google search. Maybe one of you guys could post a picture of her with her corncob. (I definitely have to take the time to learn how to post pictures on the forum.) timm2, don't hesitate to ask any...

    I'm almost sad

I bought pipe off Ebay from a vendor in Isreal back in July and it sat in a postal facility in New York for a whole week. He said it would probably take several weeks for delivery, so I figured it was a customs thing and waited it out. I hope it's the same situation with your pipe, although...

    Extra Money

Back in George Washington's day, they actually did use tobacco as medium of exchange. There is a picture of of the only complete roll ever found. It was discovered in one of Washington's trunks. It's in the front of the book "All About Tobacco" by Milton Sherman, published in 1970. If I knew...

Pipe and tobacco for Labor Day

Hey Whitebriar fellow ASA, "Vigilis Salutis"! Sorry I never got back to you, please accept my apologies. Your p.m. to me disappeared before I could read it. I will send you a p.m. tomorrow. Personally, I like the idea of celebrating the holiday by smoking at least one pipeful of an American...

My New Alden (Lonestar) Cumberland Canadian......

That's a great looking pipe. Canadians are my favorite shape. I don't think I've seen one with an egg shaped bowl before. The stem extension has beautiful grain and color. What kind of wood is it?

To Bristle Or Not To Bristle: A Poll

I use a few bristle cleaners followed by regular ones. Then, I fold up two bristles and swab out the bowl with them after smoking. I like the bristle cleaners better than the brush because they are a larger diameter than the brushes I have.

Pipe and tobacco for Labor Day

Has anybody else thought of smoking a certain pipe and tobacco for the holiday? I've decided to celebrate the day by going All American and smoking some Carter Hall in a Missouri Meerschaum. How about you? Maybe we could start a forum tradition, if there isn't one already.

One last PAD to close out the month

Nice looking pipe. Great grain and nice lines. I love the way tan sandblasts darken as you smoke them.

    HMS Rodney detail

That's impressive! How long did it take? Smoking a Navy Flake while building it would be so appropriate.

    I Did It. Finally Purchased a L'Anatra

Nice looking pipe, looks like it will be a great smoker. I like the rustication. You're not the only one here who gets excited over a new pipe.

    Favorite Pipe

Too many fall in that category to pick one. A couple of my Charatans and an Ascorti Business are among my favorites. The Ascorti is lightweight and a nice dry smoker. Under $45 would include a Shamrock (Peterson second) silver banded apple that I bought at a tag sale years ago. I found recently...

To all of the pipe makers out there - a call to action...

Numbersix, where does the Sav miss the mark for you? To me it looks just about the same, except for the curved stem. Can you succesfully straighten a stem? If you had a straight stem made and maybe a silver band put on the Sav, would that do it? Most repair shops charge around $25 for a stem and...
