    Paragon Wax

Who has tried the Carnauba Wax from Walker Briar Works? I tried both Paragon and Walker Briar's wax on two Charatan Perfections of the same age and finish for comparison. Paragon seems a little shinier. I liked the somewhat softer sheen of Walker's polish. Someone said online (don't remember...

What Do You Think Of This Pipe?

I agree with Cigarmaster. The Mastro de Pajo is a much better looking pipe and has a good reputation. I am thinking of getting this same series Mastro in a straight shape. With the shape you are looking at, I would have reservations about the drilling in both of those pipes.

Anyone try BALKAN SOBRANIE PIPE TOBACCO yet?

herbindave, you're probably talking about Peretti's Royal Blend. I got some a few days ago after seeing the reviews. After the first pipeful I was hooked. I'll be smoking a lot of this blend in the future. I smoked the original Balkan Sobranie from the 1960's throught the 1980's, when I...

    Need Advice for a Comoy

Go with the Comoy. One from that era should have great briar and be a great smoker. I have two Comoy's from the mid 1960's and a Comoy second. They are great smoking pipes and Comoy pipes have some of the most beautifuly proportioned shapes. The Stanwell is still being made, so you can get...

    Biggest pet peeve

I have two; pipes with stingers and heavily cased tobacco. If you want a gurgler, get a pipe with a stinger. The tobacco contributes heavily to gurgling. Pipe tobacco can have a large amount of casing sauces; from 25% to 35% by weight, according to Nat Sherman's book "All About Tobacco"...

Nice find! Some of those tins would also be nice to have. They would look nice sitting around those pipe racks.

Good lord!!!! Someone buy me this for Christmas

Some very nice looking pipes here. The Grechuchkin rings my chimes. Besides being a pipe, it's a piece of art, although some don't see it that way.

    TAD Arrival (with pictures)

Quite a selection. My favorites are English/Oriental blends, but I've been smoking some burley blends, including Solani 656 for a change of pace. I got some Wessex Burley Slice today and am smoking it now. It's one you should consider trying. Check out the reviews on it.

    Friday evening...what's your smoke?

I started the day smoking a bowl of Harkness Tower from the Owl Shop, one of my favorite English blends, while waiting for the brown truck with an order from L.J.Peretti. I got some of their Royal Blend, which has been compared to Balkan Sobranie, their Blend 33, a burley and cavendish blend and...

Strange Looking pipe on eBay, Never Seen one before??

It's a Dawes Underslung, named after General George Dawes, who smoked one all the time. He was Vice President of the U.S. from 1925 to 1929. They have an inner bowl with a draw hole on the bottom, so they are somewhat similiar to a calabash in design. In over 50 years of pipe smoking I have...

    College Days & Pipe Smoking

For years, the smell of Mixture 79 would trigger memories of the student lounge at the local university branch I attended in the early 60's. Several guys would sit in the lounge smoking it, filling the air with the aroma. Back then, pipe smoking was a cool thing to do for college students.

Charatan Select with 4 metal discs inlaid in shank?

The dark circle around the shank looks like a glue joint. I had a shank repaired on a GBD Canadian years ago. They had to replace part of the shank with new wood and they glued a metal tube inside the repaired shank for reinforcement. I wonder if the plugs were to replace missing wood. Maybe...

    Big Brown Was Here

You can't beat their service. I placed two orders with them last month and both arrived here in Connecticut the next day.

In praise of Dr Grabow pipes

ejames and rothnh, thanks for the info. I hope I didn't appear to throw a wet blanket on all the praise of Grabows. That was not my intent. I was relating my experience was with just one pipe. As I said before, there has been so much praise for them that I have to give them a try. I am checking...
