    Meerschaum help

Strambach Meerschaum Pipes are carved from Masse or Formed Block. I have no experience with their Pipes other than the Gourd Calabash I own - which is a great Pipe. Artisans outside of Turkey had to get creative with the use of materials after the Turkish government passed laws back in 1961...

Where to order meer mortise/tennon replacement

See White Push Pulls 5/16" Reg or 3/8" Large $10.20 a dozen. Always replace the mortise & the tenon as a set. The mortise can be removed using a flat bladed screwdriver & turning in a counterclockwise direction. http://www.pipemakers.org/misc_products.html

    Any Calabash Experts Out There?

I'm with you on this one cortezattic... I've never seen a Block Meerschaum bowl in a Pioneer Gourd Calabash. The one I purchased back in the day cost $25 and came in a plastic bag with a pasteboard top, complete with a hole in to to hang for display on a pegboard hook.

    Any Calabash Experts Out There?

Cortezattic is correct. Pioneer Gourd Calabash Pipes featured pressed Meerschaum bowls. Likely the premier Gourd Calabash Pipe that is in current manufacture and doesn't have a Block Meerschaum bowl would be Strambach. The Strambach bowl is Meerschaum Masse, which is formed Meerschaum. I...

    Dunhill London Mixture

To me, this blend did not benefit from the changes Orlik made to it. I enjoy the Murray's issue immensely, but cannot smoke this current incarnation. Fortunately, Steve Books blends London Mixture, which I've smoked and found it to be the same taste as the Murray's issue, without the benefits...

Smooth Meerschaums To Hot To Handle?

The smoking characteristics of Sepiolite that make it desirable for use in Pipes is that the stone is an non-expanding type of clay that will absorb it's own weight in liquids, with a needle like morphology that also dissipates heat effectively. The way Block Meerschaum dissipates heat from the...

All apologies to Fred and other Meer lovers

Yep, all it takes is at least one quality smoke and you may find yourself becoming a convert. If you keep it clean and care for it, things will just continue to get better the more you smoke it.

Meerschaum Pipe Carving: Another Art Fading into History

I've got a copy of Meerschaum Museum, Governor of Eskisehir Bahaeddin Guney, 1989. Sadly, the Meerschaum Museum no longer exists. The Carving schools are gone and a good number of the mining villages have become ghost towns. A number of Carvers that were featured in this book still survive...

    Meer Pipe Cases

What little I know is that the traditional Pipe cases for Meerschaums are as much an art form as the Pipes. I don't know of anyone outside of Turkey who makes them. They aren't that expensive, but the shipping is enough to make you think about it....

    Meer restoration Questions.

If you choose to sand the Pipe it is best to use 12,000 to 18,000 grit Micro mesh with Everclear. Coarser grades will leave scratches that show up noticeably. The Everclear serves to both help remove the grime and to keep the Micro mesh from clogging up. If you choose to remove deep...

    Meer restoration Questions.

Sanding the finish can cause the Pipe to loose years of patina development. The more conservative approach, which preserves as much of the patina as possible, is to clean the exterior with Everclear and a clean white cotton cloth. Once this dries, rub white Beeswax on the Pipe while smoking...
