Best Bang for the Buck Factory Pipes

[the Upshall is my favorite although I do not care for the way the stems oxidize] Exactly...

    Deertongue Not For Me

Ah, glad I found a like mind. I've had the same experience and gave away a few lovingly composed and otherwise probably very good samples containing just 'a touch of deertongue'. Can't stand the stuff, it clings to your nostrils like cat's pee...

    Estate Reiner Pipe

Looks good and if it's anything like my Reiner it will be an excellent smoker. Have you had a look at the stamping?

    Dunhill Pipe Tobacco

I like most of them very much, but Elizabethan is at the top of the list.

    Dunhill Black Spot

About a year ago I had a very friendly exchange with Mr. Kalmon Hener at Dunhill's about non-white spots (mine's red). He was absultely adamant that to his knowledge and Dunhill's archives no pipe ever left their premises with anything but a white spot. That would make John Loring's suggestion...

    Big Ben pipes?

Big Bens are good smokers. The company had a long tradition in making affordable pipes. Well-made, but nothing fancy. You could perhaps compare them best to say, Kaywoodie or Dr. Grabow, or any other mass-produced American brand, or with European brands like Butz-Choquin or the standard...

    Pipe Filters Reconsidered

I wouldn't use wood of any kind. As you smoke your pipe, it will get hot and wet, expand and get jammed or in the worst case, split your pipe. Better take a piece of plastic rod and drill that out.

    James Upshall Sandblast

Wow, that's an Upshall like no other I've ever seen, old cajun. Huge is rare, rusticated is more rare, and all that in a canadian. My best entry is this, not for shape or size but just because it seems to like being smoked more than any other pipe I have:

    James Upshall Sandblast

Upshalls are great pipes, mostly because Barry Jones is a true craftsman. You won't be disappointed with your new pipe, but you might start saving up for the next. There really is no turning back from an Upshall... Show us yours?

    Rustic vs. Sandblast

In addition to the above it might be worth mentioning that a good blast is considered more difficult to achieve than a rustication. It requires a good eye for the grain before starting and in the process, a very delicate touch.

    Where Are You Located?

A small town called Woubrugge, about fifteen miles south of Amsterdam. Lots of lakes, canals and rivers around, which is a good thing if you're a lock keeper  .

    Show Us Your Best Smoker(s)

Tough call, but it would have be these two. My Upshall EX: And this Ashton: Size does matter, is my conclusion.

    Hilson

I live right next door from Belgium but his name doesn't seem to ring a bell even here... How did you learn about him?

Have you any more info on A.M. Sanoul, rothn? He really seems a man of mystery...

Custom 9mm Adapter or Just Smoke It As Is?

The same question had me bothered so I have an experiment going using a new filter pipe, smoked with the 9mm filter, with an adapter or as-is. One tobacco, of course. A few weeks in, only the obvious seems confirmed: the more empty space in your pipe, the more condensation, wetness, and goo...

Help With a Pipe I Have

Bruce, Zenith pipes were indeed made in The Netherlands, up to a few years ago. New, their prices ranged from 30-90 euros (app. $40-110). I've added a link, but I hope your Dutch is up to it  http://www.pijpenkabinet.nl/Smokiana/04-Zenith.html

What is the Prized Possession in Your Cellar?

We're cheating, here. 'The prized possession' implies a single item and on a forum like this, it should be tobacco. Seriously: I'm only whining because until two years ago I had similar bottles of wine as those mentioned above in my cellar. I had to pour all of them down the sink because of what...
