Hey Guys,
I purchased an estate (never smoked) James Upshall. I have been looking online and I cannot find them for sale anywhere. Anyone know anything about these. I received it yesterday bought it from one of the site sponsors and its a really sweet looking pipe. Just wanted to see if anyone knew anything more about the brand. They do have a website, but just thought it was weird that I couldn't find any for sale online. This is also my first English pipe my other 4 are savs, so looking forward to firing it up. Any info would be great.

James Upshall pipes are made by Barry Jones, formerly of Charatan. They are great English pipes. I have an Upshall and it smokes great, with a comfortable stem. I also have a Tilshead (an Upshall second), but haven't smoked it yet. Many of their pipes are sold on ebay (jamesupshallpipeco). Sandblasts are fairly uncommon -- most of their pipes are smooth and some are rusticated.
Forum member Al is a big Upshall fan and for many smokers, Upshall is their favorite English maker -- even above Ashton and Dunhill.

mgolfd, welcome to the site. Upshalls are in my opinion great smoking pipes and better than Dunhill. I have smoked most of the major English brands such as Dunhill, Ashton,Ferndown,GBD, Sasinie,Willmer,Charatan and to my tastes Upshall stands at the top along with the two Willmers I have tried. I think their stem work is great and the button design makes them very comfortable. Here is their site which has a lot of info. http://www.upshallusa.com/
You can also read about the brand here. http://pipedia.org/wiki/Upshall

mfgold welcome to the forum.
You will enjoy your Upshall. They are great smoking pipes.
The brand was started in 1978 by Kenneth Barnes, who was managing director of Charatan. He took with him Barry Jones, Charatan's best pipe carver, who took over after Barnes died. Current production is around 35 pipes a week. The pipe and stem are hand carved.
You will find more information on their website.
They are one of the very best English pipes made today.
I bought one a few years after they first came out and I just got an estate sandblast billiard, that I smoked for the first time a few days ago. In comparison to all my other English pipes, it shows the potential of being one of the very best, if not best smoking pipe I have. I'm sure you will enjoy yours.
I think that new pipes are currently available only through Upshall direct, but I may be wrong.

Upshalls are great pipes, mostly because Barry Jones is a true craftsman. You won't be disappointed with your new pipe, but you might start saving up for the next. There really is no turning back from an Upshall... Show us yours?

Wow, that's an Upshall like no other I've ever seen, old cajun. Huge is rare, rusticated is more rare, and all that in a canadian. My best entry is this, not for shape or size but just because it seems to like being smoked more than any other pipe I have:

I am a big fan of Upshall pipes and consider my four amount my best smokers (in Ashton, Charatan,GBD, Ferndown, etc.) That is a classic billiard and unsmoked is a rare find. I don't have a blasted Upshall, but just missed one Sunday evening, it went for $76. I find the draft on an Upshall to be just right. Let us know how you enjoy it when she arrives.

Well last night after hearing all of your thoughts on the newbie to my collection. I rubbed out some Erik Stokkebye 4th generation flake, packed it up and took it outside for a smoke. This one smoked the cool the whole way down not hot bite at all, it went out only once the whole time that's a record breaker for me. Like I said I have 4 savs, I dont know if it was the pipe, the packing, me puffing or some other variant.
