Got the low-down on Mastro De Paja

Confusion set in, so I had to dig up my only Mastro de Paja, an elderly but as yet unsmoked canadian. Stamping on the bottom of the shank reads "Media" followed by what appears to be "3C". On the right side of the shank it reads "Pesaro", preceded by a single octopian sun. Finally, on the left...

Some new to me estates and a Dunhill Dating Question (Pic heavy)

Looks like Dunhill's style of a number '16' to me.

Think of buying porsche design pipe~!

The Stig is right: the original series were made by Oldenkott. Porsche Design later sold the production rights to E. Gubbels & Zn., the parent company of Big Ben. A few changes were made to the original design, making the later series immediately recognizable by their screwed-on metal rim in...

What About a Chacom Year Pipe?

You need not worry about it being crap. Chacom have a decent reputation, so if you like the shape and the condition the pipe is in, I'd say go for it. I happen to have a Chacom POY 95 which is rather similar in shape:

Here is the response e-mail from the Stanwell "Year" Pipes

The average price for a Stanwell POY was around 200 dollars when new: the ones with silver fittings were around 350, pipes like the one on the upper left went for around 150. I sold an unsmoked silver spigot about a year ago for 150 euro's (app. 195 dollars).

    Pipe smoking a sport?!

Smoking competetions have quite a large fanbase in Europe. Nationals, international championships, training sessions and slow-smoking coaches, a fifty-page book of rules and regulations, costumes, you name it and it's out there. There are two groups: clay and briar. You pay a fee, take a seat...

Churchwarden: Who has em and how often smoked

I have exactly one churchwarden, and although it's been in my collection for at least fifteen years I've never smoked it. Most of my pipesmoking goes on outdoors and somehow I don't see myself walking around with it:

    Porsche Design?

The original Porsche pipes were made around the turn of the century , as the name suggests from a design by the Porsche design bureau (who by the way also designed coffee-makers, sunglasses, pens, etc, etc.), by Oldenkott in Germany. The pipe featured a briar bowl, surrounded by an aluminum hood...

    What was your first car?

My first was an Alfa Romeo Giulia. I loved it: a true wolf in sheep's clothes. Drove several Alfa's to an untimely death since but not one was so much fun to drive as this one (or one very similar): http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT1ynMCHSTQnzZy7DJsu_WStJ9uYVsDDlJ7v8eMd7KDIZg8D-fuuwt

Thinking of getting a Chacom; any experiences?

In France, I believe, Chacom is considered to be the best Saint Claude has to offer. The other 'C' in the logo is for Chapuis. I know them personally as very well-made pipes and smooth smokers. Your choice is not my taste in stems, but the shape of the bowl is a fine classic and looks good!

I have a card and pin like that somewhere. Might frame them up too, I like the idea.

    Tobacco "Journal"?

When I visited the CPCC show in 2000 (or was it 2001?) I traded a magazine subscription with a guy who just started publishing tobacco journals: nicely bound books on app. A4-size like a ship's log, with ample room on every page to make notes on the tobaccos you smoked, in what pipe and what...

    Red Dot!?

Yup, Bill would know and if he didn't, he'd sure be willing to make a wild guess. I visited his place once and after a tour of the pipemaking facilities we wound up in one of his regular pubs. The rest of the day has disappeared in a haze of pipesmoke and English beer. Anyway, I wasn't really...

    Red Dot!?

I retried asking Dunhill's and managed to get in contact with mr. Hener, who proved himself to be a very friendly and helpful gentleman. He assured me that as far as he is aware, no Dunhill pipe ever left their establishment with a purposely inserted red dot. The only possible explanation he...

Smoking shown in children's books in past decades

A few postcards from way back on a similar theme: The caption reads: "Just like father, only without tobacco" "I bring you these, because I love you so much"

    Chewing Pipe Tobacco

I never tried chewing tobacco but now my curiosity has got the better of me, knowing there's an old pouch of MacB Va somewhere in my stash. If I turn green I'll post a pic...

    Buy a Dunhill pipe?

There are a few white spots in my piperack. It is probably true Dunhill never made a bad pipe, but I have seen and owned Dunhills whose quality didn't justify their price. The level of pricing is an essential part of their marketing strategy and any prospective buyer would be wise to keep that...

I Need Help With Hilson Blair Belgium Pipe

1952 Dunhill Tanshell Poker - Info needed

This reminds me of one of mine: . This shape is called a cherrywood. A while ago I did some googling on this nomenclature and if I remember correctly the name stems from a traditional (i.e. centuries old) type of pipe which was constructed out of two pieces of wood, one (or both?) of them...

    Help Identifying a pipe

As it says 'Austria' on the rim of the bowl, my guess would be that's the country of origin. Across Bavaria and other parts of southern Germany as well as in Austria pipes like this are sold as souvenirs. It may be smokable, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high...
