How Many Forums are You on?

I once belonged to a composers forum but after not too long the politically correct and closed mindset groupthink afflicted denizens just became insufferable. I was even accused at one point of trying to set music "progress" back three hundred years! (I favor traditional harmony) Who would have...

    Primitive Pipe

I saw this specimen during a recent hunting expedition in the tangled jungles of ebay. I considered bagging it with a quick three buck bet, then hesitated for a moment. "Is this someone's honest attempt at crafting a pipe from the surrounding environs with only simple tools at hand, or a true...

    Estate Acquisition -Yello Bole Pug

Very nice! Got one of those too. Now you need a Kaywoodie Colt to keep your Pug company!

    Ebay auctions with reserve

I also skip reserve auctions. Yes there is risk to the seller with open auctions but I understand that's what makes them exciting. You might win, you might lose. If I had confidence in the worth of the product I was selling I'd start at $0.99. Almost everyone looking will drop a dollar on a bid...

    Damn you eBay PAD

owen wrote: The truth is, a lot times the sellers don't know what they are listing and tend to misspell or misidentify the pipe. Since most pipe hunters search by name they miss a lot of these listings. And yeah, it's also true that most aren't interested in the same pipes I am. It's all good...

No Extra Charge - Filter Included

I'll have to look at the finish when it arrives in order to determine how aggressive the restoration will have to be. I always try to do as little as necessary. From what I see in the seller's pics it looks pretty good. Here's the original listing: Medico Prince

    has anyone ever seen this?

I see these glass-eyed figurals frequently on ebay, though this is the first rhino one I've seen. There are lots bulls and monkeys out there. Yours looks like it's in very good condition since most are missing horns and eyes.

    Pipe and Tobacco Allowance

I find it very difficult to stick to a budget. I limit myself to one estate pipe a week and one $40.00 tobacco order a month. Sometimes I fall off the wagon, but by at least trying maybe I keep from going broke.

No Extra Charge - Filter Included

Won along with this Medico V.H.Q. was this fabulous 40 year old filter. Maybe I'll put it up on ebay and list it as "Estate Find. Very Fine Vintage Medico Filter". Starting bid around $9.99. Shipping is $25.00. The pipe itself looks like it will clean up really well.

    Damn you eBay PAD

The monster affects us all in unique ways. I keep telling myself not to even look at my ebay feed until the the last won pipe gets here. However, I always succumb to the temptation and peek. Then I'll see some 60 year old pipe there in an auction ending in 2 minutes with no bids looking forlorn...

    Yard Sales

I'm going to buy a Peterson later this summer. All I can say is that if it isn't significantly better than my $1.00 Silver Duke I'm going to send it back!

Anyone Know How To Permanently Turn Off Spell Check In Posts?

When I post I purposely use words I know spell check knows. For instance, according to this edit window, "smokable" is not a word but "usable" is so I'll use the later. I guess I shouldn't be such a spell check wuse...uh..whoose?... wimp.

***What Are You Smoking *** (June 2014)

I've been smoking Sutliff's, "Old San Francisco" today. Kind of mild but the second half of the bowl has a rich cocoa flavor that's pretty good.

Fills in Briar and Pipe Philosopy

If I can have a pipe without noticeable fills I'd choose that one. In the price range I shop for estate pipes I'd rather not buy one with fills, and I'm pretty darn cheap. I've read that if you are refinishing a pipe with fills you can mark them out with a Sharpie pen before restaining so they...

    Japanese B&M Interview?

My recollections of Japan from the early 1980's are that I was the only pipe smoker on the islands. It was certainly a conversation item at the time. I'd be interested to know what pipe smokers are thought of today and if pipes are more common now.
