Your Perfect Drinks Paring with Your tobacco

I often find that I like a sweet drink to balance out a savory/strong/stout tobacco, or vice versa. -So some ruby port with something beefy like Nightcap or a cigar. (Generally, ruby port is far too sweet for me to drink alone, but this seems to work.) -Coffee with a mild aromatic like Russ's...

Filtered pipes without filters good for smoking wet blends?

Yeah, I think you guys are right in your theorizing: that's essentially what I had been thinking. Well, the thing is, when I smoked it in my filtered pipes sans filter, I had no idea they were wet! They smoked beautifully. In the unfiltered pipes, they gurgle. For the record, I'm not talking...

    Tonquin/Tonkin bean flavour.

Topping wise, they aren't much alike. I can't detect any Tonquin in Dark Flake (though it may certainly be there in a small amount), it seems to be overwhelmingly Oil of Bergamot. The underlying tobacco in both is similar in that it is a rich, flavorful flake. 1792 and Dark Flake are quite close...

Filtered pipes without filters good for smoking wet blends?

This is something I've noticed with my pipes: All of my unfiltered pipes tend to gurgle when I smoke wet, aromatic blends in them. Some even do so with middle-of-the-road blends. Yet my filtered pipes, which I never use a filter in, never gurgle or have any problem. Even the cheap basket pipes...

    Escudo vs Dunhill DNR

I'm curious: do we know how old the tins we are buying are? For example, I'd guess there are many tins in a tobacco warehouse that are 6 months to even a year old? And shouldn't even that age have an affect on a blend? If I purchase DNR and Escudo at the same time, what's to say one tin isn't a...

    "Burper"

I didn't even get the burper joke at first. I sometimes get the burps as opposed to hiccups with strong tobacco, so I figured it must be referring to the strength of the blend at first. That sounds like a tasty blend, though.

    Old Half and Half tobacco

Cool find, and actually really beautiful pictures. It's the kind of thing that piques my interest. A lot of my interest in pipes comes from the historical aspect: I know many great men of history smoked pipes. There is something mystical about joining in on that great tradition with so many who...

Lane Dark Red vs Cult Blood Red Moon

I have been interested in a comparison/contrast between these two. When I began pipe smoking, I thought a cherry blend would be cool. I ordered Mac Baren 7 Seas Red. I like it fine, but it's just not quite how I expected cherry pipe tobacco to taste. How do DR and BRM compare to 7 Seas Red? It...

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

Yum. Although something in me balks at mixing blends. I'm not sure what it is. Don't worry, I'll get over it.

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

Thanks--I looked on their website the other day, but couldn't seem to locate the twists. I was using a proxy server, though, because some alcohol/tobacco sites are blocked at work. Turns out I just needed to use search function. As you say, all are labeled as Dark-Fired Virginia.

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

Once I learned not to fear the nicotine, I realized I actually loved the taste of these blends. By the way, to answer your question in the other thread, I did get that Dark Flake Scented. It seems it's made with a similar kind of tobacco leaf--"equal proportions only Malawi Dark Fired Leaf and...

    Received Billy Budd Sample Today

The generosity of this forum brings back a little of my faith in humanity, so to speak. I was initially lured away from cigars by pipe tobacco. I wasn't an aficionado by any means, but perhaps sometime soon I'll venture back into cigar leaf territory, and when I do, it'll probably be with Billy...

Opened a Tin of McClelland Smyrna No 1... do they all come with uncut leaves?

Beautiful presentation. Has anyone tried smoking the uncut leaves? I'd certainly be tempted...

    What is Frog Morton

Well, "comparable" to Nightcap might be an overstatement, unless you just take the term "comparable" completely in its denotative sense. It is possible to compare the two, as they both have a defining flavor of latakia, but Nightcap is just much, much stronger. I would hazard a guess that most...

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

So, unless I misinterpreted the previous posters, it appears the general consensus is that the twists are mostly Virginia leaf, albeit a darker variety. That was an interesting video! He seems to know what he's talking about, and his implication is that these ropes are entirely made out of...

Do You Back Away From Mild Tobacco?

I tend to either be in the mood for a mild aromatic or a really strong, substantial smoke. I often enjoy aromatics like 1Q, BCA, Black Seas Red, etc.--or it's Irish Flake , G&H Ropes, SG 1792, Royal Yacht, G&H Dark Flake. It's actually the in between that doesn't get a lot of love from me.

    Where Are The Holes

Interesting thread! I'm involved in a similar world tour myself. I suppose I simply enjoy variety. It is part of what drew me to pipe smoking. It's just like with cuisine: I know very few people that only visit one restaurant, and no others; I don't know many who eat the exact same thing for...

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

Where can I find such descriptions? I buy in bulk, so I haven't seen anything that comes on the tins, and the things I've seen online don't specify whether it's a Virginia, Burley, etc.

G&H Twists-- made of VA, or Burley/KY?

Cool! Thanks for the input, guys.
