Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Happy Brown Bogie Twist

Hah! The reviewer is quite confused regarding his etymology. Since I'm an English teacher, I did a little research, and found the term bogey/bogie used as early as 1855 to refer to twist tobacco in Arthur Hill's Food and Its Adulterations (p. 548). It is not used in the slang form for "booger"...

    Can't keep Penzance a secret

My wife says 1792 Flake is an aphrodisiac. The last few times I smoked it ended up well. So yeah, I win. :D

    The Magic of Layering Tobacco

A little probably goes a long way with the room note. Really, most non-aros don't smell "worse" than aromatics in a sense--plenty of aros are based on Virginia and/or Burley leaf, so a plain VA or Burley shouldn't smell worse than an aromatic--it just won't smell as good, if that makes sense. Of...

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Happy Brown Bogie Twist

I smoked a bowl while my wife read 70 pages to me from C.S. Lewis's Great Divorce on the back patio, so it felt good to be glued to the couch! Deathmetal, how similar is the taste between Brown Bogie and Brown Twist Sliced? I thought of buying some for a friend because I think he'd really like...

    Home made flake

All I have to say is, thanks for posting this thread! It sounds like something I'd be interested in tackling someday, so when someone goes to the trouble of doing so, I appreciate it when he writes down his process for posterity's sake.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Happy Brown Bogie Twist

Yeah, it's relatively difficult to come by! I saw rum twist was available on smokingpipes, so I bought half a pound of it. (That's a lot for me because I don't smoke that much, and don't have a large collection.) When I tasted it, I was glad I did!

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Happy Brown Bogie Twist

I recently had a generous forum member send me two twists—G&H Happy Brown Bogie and Coconut Twist--after he read how much I enjoyed the Rum and Maple Twists. (He shall remain nameless unless he outs himself—I think that’s how it’s generally done?) Anyway, I was very excited to try both these...

My daughter graduated from HS today!

Congrats! Quite the reason to celebrate!

    Ropes?

I love ropes! Haven't had any of the SG yet, but I've had the G&H brown ropes and they are heavenly. The strength of Irish Flake and more flavor. I just got to try the Brown Bogie courtesy of a generous forum member, and it's amazing. I have had to experiment with slicing thinly and packing...

    Penzance 2oz and 8oz at P&C

To be honest, it's not that bad. Think about what you'd pay for a high end cigar. We pipe smokers have it pretty good. :)

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Sweet Maple Twist - Strong & Subtly Aromatic

Thanks for feedback and encouragement! I think I'd like Happy Brown Bogie, since it's just a smaller version of the rope without topping, but I really, really like those subtle toppings! But I'm probably going to try to get around to trying all rope tobacco that has "Gawith" in its name. I think...

    Unknown flavour.

[Is confused about Cosmic being a troll] But yes, I agree strongly with what Cosmic said about smells not necessarily translating to the smoke, especially not a 1:1 correspondence. A lot of times, if there is a good tobacco under the topping and condiments (latakia, perique, etc.), it will come...

    Unknown flavour.

That was exactly how I felt about Latakia when I first smelled it. I've never felt those descriptions fit the orientals I've tasted... They are just so much more subtle than the Latakia. Even a tiny bit of Latakia can really flavor the entire blend, especially in the tin note. I came to like...

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Sweet Maple Twist - Strong & Subtly Aromatic

Update for review: I'm smoking through 1/2 pound of the Rum version of this twist, and it is equally good. A similar hint of sweetness, though of course more rummy. This is very stout stuff: I've realized that I may not have such a high nicotine tolerance, but rather that I pretty much only...

Venturing into the Lake District: Ennerdale and Dark Flake Scented

There's certainly a logic to this, and that's one approach I've taken to new blends. Nightcap was my second English blend. I think, however, that a lot of people try Ennerdale and then go and try to say that all Lakelands are the same perfumey essence. I've only tried the two above, and they...

    Tonquin/Tonkin bean flavour.

Yeah, it'd be difficult to relate it to vanilla, but I don't think there are many smells/aromas close to tonquin. You sound like me: I probably wouldn't have even noticed it at all except that it is mentioned so much in reviews and many people are apparently overpowered by the tonquin aroma. I...

Venturing into the Lake District: Ennerdale and Dark Flake Scented

That's interesting! You guys may have more sensitive palates than mine. My favorite blends so far are G&H ropes and flakes, so I do like stout tobacco. That said, I'm not a huge fan of latakia. It's OK. I'm actually surprised I don't hear the unscented Dark Flake mentioned more. Available in...

Venturing into the Lake District: Ennerdale and Dark Flake Scented

My understanding was that they weren't allowed additives that contributed to a certain percentage of the weight of the tobacco. So, they'd be confined to adding small amounts of extremely powerful scents--thus moving toward the more perfume/essential oil realm of flavorings.

Venturing into the Lake District: Ennerdale and Dark Flake Scented

I know I may be the outlier here. I think my associations may be different, as I didn't have a grandma who wore strong perfume, but I did have parents who drank Earl Grey tea constantly. Perhaps if it was titled "Queen Grey," my associations would be a bit different! I always thought of it as...

Venturing into the Lake District: Ennerdale and Dark Flake Scented

I've actually been quite scared of trying the Lakeland blends from Gawith, Hoggarth, and Co. for quite a while. They've jumped in and out of my P&C basket depending on what kind of reviews I read. I finally ordered some, and figured I'd review them both together, since it's my first time...
