I love harbor freight. While they are not Snap On tools they are not Snap On prices either. I think they offer a good value for your dollar and I have not broke any of the tools I bought from them.

If you are wanting more pressure or larger amounts, an old trick is to carefully drive a car onto what you are pressing.

You do not want too much pressure. When I first started making plugs I used my 20 ton shop press and cranked it down as much as I could. I ended up with a puck so incredibly dense that a diamond tipped saw probably could not have cut it.

All I have to say is, thanks for posting this thread! It sounds like something I'd be interested in tackling someday, so when someone goes to the trouble of doing so, I appreciate it when he writes down his process for posterity's sake.

My C clamp at this point is working pretty good. I am now looking into growing my own baccy in the back yard. Will document that journey as well if I decide to do. Its really hot in AZ, DUH, not sure if its too hot. There is at least one variety that is resistant to sunburn and that is American 14. Cobguy is growing but he is a little further north from Phoenix and cooler. Just appeals to me to go from seed to pipe. Being in control of the entire process.

What I remember seeing in my searches is approximately 325 psi for flakes.
So, if you have a 4x4 mold that is 16 sq. inches:
16 sq. in. X 325 psi = 5200
5200 / 2000 (tons to pounds) = 2.6 tons (Making my 6 ton press overkill)

Can the same be made from ready rubbed tobacco? I mean getting some good tinned tobacco and mixing it and then turning it to flake?

No, you have to use whole-leaf to make flakes. If you press ribbon, you'd get more of a crumble cake but what works really well for that is larger chopped pieces.

Agreed! That would be a nice smaller set-up. In order to use my 6-ton press, I'm having a larger 6x6 mold made and even then won't go "full press".
