What's the Deal with Bowl Coatings?

This is generally my exact method. Sometimes I'll skip the honey, though. And if I do coat in honey, I'll heat it up first so it's a VERY thin coating.

    Lady Kat

So sorry to hear this. Pets are family, and losing one can hurt just as much as losing a human family member. I know that the two dogs I've lost still feel like profound losses in my life, even years later. Lady Kat lived a good, long life though, and I hope that is some small comfort. I...

What's the Deal with Bowl Coatings?

I have always removed a coating from any new pipe that has it. Usually a little alcohol on q-tips will do. Like some others, I just don't trust what might be in it, and I also prefer to control the break-in process myself, which means (to me) starting with bare briar.

Wearing a Mask, While Smoking a Pipe

This shows a maturity rarely seen on the inter webs these days. FWIW, my comment was in response to you self-identifying in another post as conservative and religious, so I might have made some quick (and erroneous) assumptions about other opinions you might have. I am more of a progressive...

    Samuel Gawith St. James Flake

Oh man! Seriously? I'd love to have a preview of what mine is gonna taste like in 6 years!

    Samuel Gawith St. James Flake

I had good results rubbing out first, then drying it to a crisp (although not so dry it breaks into dust). I even tried the microwave trick one evening when I didn't want to wait. Nuked a bowls worth on a paper towel for 15 seconds, then let it sit 10 minutes. It was also a fantastic smoke...

I enjoy the hay notes in the fresh SJF, so I don't necessarily see that as a negative, but I also think that time will turn that to rich Virginia sweetness. As for Deception Pass, it is the one VaPer from which I have not had a great smoke yet. I picked up a tin about a year and a half ago...

Wearing a Mask, While Smoking a Pipe

Hear hear. This right here. I have a feeling that cosmic and I might not agree on a lot of hot button issues, but I am 100 percent in agreement here. How mask wearing became a hot button issue is beyond me. Yes, I know what happened to make it that way, but the virtue AND vice signaling that...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2020?***

Currently enjoying some C and D Sunday Picnic in a Tsuge Tokyo Bamboo sitter. Can't decide if I like this or GL Pease Embarcadero better. Both are great smokes!

Mine isn’t quite as stubby, but it looks very similar. I really like the rustication. That seems to be a forte for the Italians (see: Castillo Sea Rock).

    What Is Your GoTo Lighter?

Ditto. Probably a bic 95 percent of the time, especially in the summer when the desert dryness evaporates Zippo fluid within a couple of days.

My only poker is the pipe in my profile pic, an OMS Cherrywood poker. It's probably pretty similar to the Dagner pokers out there, as I believe that Dagner and OMS pipes are made in the same factory in Italy. Either way, it's a sitter and a great smoker.

What a fantastic piece! I can't decide if the extra weight from the casings would help or hurt with the balance. Love the stem too!

How Do You Spend Your Evenings?

I have plenty of free time at this particular stage in life as I have just finished a terminal (emphasis on "terminal") degree and I'm currently underemployed. I spend that time on my mountain bike, hiking the desert and mountains of the SW, the occasional round of golf, and stargazing...

    Samuel Gawith St. James Flake

My goal is to wait at least 3-4 years to open the first jar, but it's so good fresh that I think I'm gonna have to pick up some more at the next drop (which hopefully will happen sooner with the new distributor). I can see this blend being a regular part of my rotation.

    Samuel Gawith St. James Flake

This is not a formal review, per se, but a post in praise of Samuel Gawith's St. James Flake. I picked up a box of this in the latest Gawith drop. I had never tried it before but given that I love both VaPers and Full Virginia Flake I had a pretty good idea I that I would like it. I put away...

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2020?

KBV Sakura in a Chris Morgan blackjack bent bulldog. Went for a walk in the woods today with the wife and dogs, and we found a nice shady spot to hang the hammocks and relax for a while.

    Are You Addicted To Nicotine?

I'm gonna go with "no." I'm a near daily pipe smoker, but if I have to take a week or two off (say, to fulfill the semi-annual visit to the in-laws) I don't notice any ill effects. For reference, all my tobacco consumption is from pipes, with the occasional cigar. I've never been a cigarette...

    Keepin' It Smokey...

Always good to see his pipes going somewhere they will be smoked and enjoyed. I picked up a two dot Sasieni from his collection a month or two ago, and it’s a great smoker. I also have a Tsuge Tokyo, and it’s a great pipe!
