What's the Deal with Bowl Coatings?
I have always removed a coating from any new pipe that has it. Usually a little alcohol on q-tips will do. Like some others, I just don't trust what might be in it, and I also prefer to control the break-in process myself, which means (to me) starting with bare briar.- musicman

I had good results rubbing out first, then drying it to a crisp (although not so dry it breaks into dust). I even tried the microwave trick one evening when I didn't want to wait. Nuked a bowls worth on a paper towel for 15 seconds, then let it sit 10 minutes. It was also a fantastic smoke...- musicman

I enjoy the hay notes in the fresh SJF, so I don't necessarily see that as a negative, but I also think that time will turn that to rich Virginia sweetness. Poker Recommendations
My only poker is the pipe in my profile pic, an OMS Cherrywood poker. It's probably pretty similar to the Dagner pokers out there, as I believe that Dagner and OMS pipes are made in the same factory in Italy. Either way, it's a sitter and a great smoker. -

I'm gonna go with "no." I'm a near daily pipe smoker, but if I have to take a week or two off (say, to fulfill the semi-annual visit to the in-laws) I don't notice any ill effects. Keepin' It Smokey...
Always good to see his pipes going somewhere they will be smoked and enjoyed. I picked up a two dot Sasieni from his collection a month or two ago, and it’s a great smoker. I also have a Tsuge Tokyo, and it’s a great pipe!
