Amazed by the Generosity of Forum Members

I am constantly amazed by the generosity of all of you wonderful people. A week or two ago, I posted my thoughts-kind of a review-on Samuel Gawith St James Flake, based on my recent purchase of a box in the latest drop. The consensus from many forum members was “yes, this is a great blend, but...

    How Do Y'all Dedicate?

I have pipes dedicated to Va based blends, pipes dedicated to blends with Latakia, a couple that I only smoke Burley based blends out of, one or two for Aros, and a pipe for strong lakeland blends.

Heartbreak Hotel (Title Added by Bob)

I'm not surprised that SPC has made good with you. They have about the best customer service in the business. However, this is a trend I've noticed lately from them. My packages from 6-12 months ago were packaged really well, with individually wrapped tins and lots of padding, but the past...

    Does A Full VaPer Exist?

I'd rate them: 1. Hal 2. Marlin Flake 3. Old Gowrie I like Hal but it's not my favorite of the three. For me, Marlin Flake totally nails the fullness/sweetness ratio. I would also recommend, as others have, SJF and Bayou Morning. There are a number of other VaPers out there with dark-fired...

    Va/Per Perique Percentage

Seems like my favorite VaPers all have between 10-20 percent Perique, although I also like Bayou Morning which is 25 percent. Once you get below 10 percent I feel like the Perique is really in the background, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if the Virginias are good quality, but I view...

Put Your Theoretical Science Hats on Please

I occasionally experience the same burning sensations from red Virginias, but I find it's only an occasional thing, and dependent on many factors, such as what I ate that day, etc. This all leads me to believe it's a PH thing, and that sometimes the PH in my mouth is not conducive to smoking...

Stubby, Chubby Billiards... What’s All the Fuss??

I think this is just the latest trend in pipe smoking, much like the trend towards fat ring sizes in cigars about 10 years ago (See Nub). I personally prefer a longer pipe, just because I feel I inhale less second-hand smoke than in these shorties. I have two short pipes, the OMS poker in my...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2020?***

Earlier this evening, as I was out in the desert stargazing with my scopes, I enjoyed a bowl of Ken Byron Ventures The Dread Planet in an OMS Cherrywood poker. I really enjoy what Ken does with Va/Oriental blends and I look forward to picking up some Basmatica the next time it's released...

    Ball Jar Lid Lifespan

I've only been in this hobby for the past two years, so I don't have many jars that have been closed much longer than 18 months, but I'm sure others on this forum have tobacco in jars that has been there for a decade or more, and it's stayed fresh the entire time. My one experience was that I...

Am I A Shmuck For Preferring Corn Cobs?

No, not a Schmuck at all. Cobs represent the best value in pipe smoking, and you'll save a ton of cash buying them over briars, which you can them promptly spend on more tobacco. I have one cob, and 15-20 briars, so my preference is obvious, but to each their own. Everyone should smoke what...

Best Bourbon For An Old Fashion?

The Old Fashioned is an interesting cocktail, particularly because there are so many variations that have strong traditions of their own, such as the upper-midwestern Brandy Old Fashioned with pineapple juice and Sprite, which is nice for dessert, but not when you want a good strong drink...

    Does This Humidor Need Seasoning?

I've had pretty good luck with Herbes de Provence, and then a slow braise to loosen up the wood fibers. Seriously though, as others have said, if it's holding a consistent humidity, it doesn't need seasoning. I've used distilled water, sponged 2-3 times with good results.

    Hello You All

    Bienvenido from Tucson, AZ, USA!

    Hello

Welcome from Tucson, Arizona! My practice with tobaccos that I don't like on the first try is to put them in a jar and give them a try a few months down the road. Often either the tobacco or my palate will change somewhat and give me a more enjoyable experience. A VaKenPer like Speakeasy...

    Help Me Coin a Term

Well, we can't talk about that particular word without referring to the "etymologist" who studied the word more extensively than anyone else: I miss Carlin. I'm sure he'd have some very biting and sage things to say about what's happening in the world today.

    C&D Carolina Red Flake Question

Feeling tempted by this since I do love Straight Virginias and I do enjoy the 2018 vintage, as well as the Carolina Red with 18 yr Perique that was released earlier this year, but I think I've exhausted the TAD budget for at least the next few weeks, especially since I'd like to (finally) pick...

    How Do You Stay Fit?

When I came here to go to grad school, I had two goals as a skier (knowing that Lemmon Ski Valley is only open for just a few days a year). The first was to ski powder in southern AZ. Accomplished this last winter. The other is ski and mountain bike on the same day. Haven’t done it yet, but I...

    Famous Living Pipe Smokers

No way! While I am also a conductor and singer, I have spent far more time in my career as a professional musician at the bench of a pipe organ than anything else. I also have never "met" a fellow organist on a message board unrelated to music. Glad to see that there are two of us here!

Laudisi Distribution Group (LDG) Will Distribute Gawith & Hoggarth Brand Tobacco to U.S. Tobacconists & Tobacco Retailers

This is great news, and I look forward to these blends being more widely available, especially Bosun and Ennerdale.
