    You've probably read Anthony Powell's Dance to the Music of Time series. The premise sounds similiar to Raven but a mostly earlier period and more sedate, I would think.

    Of course, he's probably best known for Empire of the Summer Moon, which was also excellent. But his other books are probably as good.

    I loved that Civil War history. I also really enjoyed his Rebel Yell.

    I’m re-reading Goddard’s Found Wanting. Also re-reading Waltari’s The Egyptian. Goddard is one of my favorites. The Egyptian is historical fiction about an ancient Egyptian doctor. The most popular novel of 1949 haha.

    Doctor Thorne in that series is also very good. The Last Chronicle of Barset is a masterpiece.

    Old Joe Krantz, Pegasus, and Morleys Best are all great burly blends. Also the Old Joe Krantz variations like White, Blue etc.

    Yes I agree that is another good one. Many Trollope novels outside of the Barsetshire and Palliser series.

    The first Palliser book - Can You Forgive Her- is not one of my favorites but still worthwhile. The Phineas Finn books and the Eustace Diamonds are especially good. The selfish, scheming Lizzie Eustace in the latter is wonderful.

    I’ve been reading and re-reading Trollope for many years. Wonderful re-creation of English life with very realistic and human characters except possibly for some of his near perfect heroines.

    I actually put the Lehman book down since it was too detailed about Congressional / navy bureaucratic infighting and various training exercises to annoy the Russians, etc. If someone was in the navy or administration at that time, it would probably be very interesting.
