    An Important Lesson Learned

I'm still chasing those eureka moments, and I've been at it almost 25 years. I can somehow pack and smoke the perfect pipe on my 40-minute morning commute, even at tin moisture. But sit at home and it's still hit or miss - I think I fuss with it too much unless my mind is slightly...

The Virginia People And The Burley People

Straight Viginias or VA/Per 90% of the time. Burley dominated blends just taste dry and dusty to me, and leave a bitter aftertaste in my mouth. Similarly, I enjoy the taste of DFK, but it gives me nausea. I do occasionally enjoy a good oriental forward blend, but those are really hard to...

Give Me the Pros and Cons of Softy Bits

Too big and, yes, I can taste the rubber material. I can also taste most Vulcanite as well, so take my super-sensitive taste buds with a proverbial grain of salt.

    Minneapolis Pipe Shop Looted

Exactly. And defacing monuments like the Lincoln Memorial in protest for civil rights would only make sense to the clinically insane.

    Which Tobaccos/Blends Have You Pressed?

I just opened and fired up my first press today, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So, my first attempt was a great success (to me). A few months ago I bought a pound of Sutliff 507s (Stoved Virginia) based on rave reviews, and the loss of a cherished blend (Dark Star). I did not enjoy the 507s...

Esoterica Kingsbridge Fans: Is This Normal?

My $0.02 guess would be that the white stuff is crystallization of the various sugar solutions and essential oils applied by Germain's, which I've read (and you can kind of smell) is an alcohol based solution. Thus, the alcohol evaporates and the various goodies are left behind on the leaves.

Esoterica Kingsbridge Fans: Is This Normal?

Yes, that's normal for Kingsbridge. I like to think of it as the powdered sugar my grandmother used to sprinkle on home made brownies. Also, my open Kingsbridge is much darker than that and the white powdery stuff is fairly ubiquitous.

    Niemeyer Hollandia

Never heard of it. I do recall a Niemeyer that used to get his ass kicked during recess in elementary school.

    Favorite BBQ Sauce?

Salt, pepper, and my charcoal Weber loaded with leftover oak and ash firewood from this past winter's fuel supply. If I need to add moisture to the meat during grilling, I'll usually apply an apple cider and cider vinegar mixture via brush. Or, I'll dunk the meat (chicken or steaks) into a...

    Whisky/Bourbon Glasses

It's very smooth yet full flavored, although a bit light on the rye pepper-like aftertaste.

PS - Thought I'd mention Tin Cup Straight Rye, my newest favorite.

    Whisky/Bourbon Glasses

I had the trucks when I was a young lad, so I received these as a part-jest Christmas gift several years ago. They're now my official whisky glasses.

The Good, the Favorite and the Everyday

Yes - it happened on the stem of my Nording freehand. Pipe tasted like bitter chemical fire, so after sitting on my shelf for 14 years, I finally sent it to Boswells and they made a new stem from Lucite. Pipe is now great.

When Nothing Tastes Good - Open a McClelland Tin

I did detect some wonderful tangy BBQ like overtones (or faint ketchup) in some of their blends, but I always attributed it to the red Virginia fermentation once the blends were canned. I never really noticed it in the bulk offerings, nor in those blends with a greater portion of bright or...
