    $700 Comoys

If the Comoy's bag is the original, I would personally date it to around 1968-1978.

    No more Ferndowns.

Thanks for letting me know that tarheel1. I was only thinking of them on Monday. I have not seen them for nearly thirty years and if you are in contact with them please send them my very warmest wishes, that is if they remember me!

the cp is the thin one, it has just been stamped a bit weirdly. I am sure that there are one or two people on this forum who know!

    Who can date this Charatan?

Thanks ssjones, after having read this link quite closely, it seems that it is 1955-1960. I hope one of the Charatan Specialists can give me some more clues!

Buffing station wanted in the UK.

I think they may have one for sale at the James Upshall factory!!!

Buffing station wanted in the UK.

I agree with 'onestrangeone'. The best type of motor is a Brooks Compton variator spindle motor (with a tapered spindle) with variable speeds from 0-2800rpm. I am pretty sure they do one in single phase. Hard-mopping (calico mop) using Cannings Lustre needs to be at 2800 rpm and final polishing...

    Interesting Dunhill snippet.

I thought the X on a Dunhill (stamped over the name) stood for 'Xchanged' i.e. the pipe had been replaced and therefore there was no more guarantee attached to it (i.e. the replacement)- any ideas are welcome- I am learning so much from these threads

    Help With Date Code

I mean the case has "Dunhill" "by Royal appointment to the late King George V1" on the Satin/silk Then in June 1953 Dunhill's 'royal appointment'was changed to Queen Elizabeth 11. The empty case may have been in stock for eight years before the correct pipes were selected to fit- just an idea...

    Help With Date Code

This set (the case) was made in between 1952 and June 1953. By Royal appointment to the late King George V1 indicates that this case was made after King George's death in 1952 and before June 1953 which was the Coronation of Elizabeth 11

1917 Dunhill Pipe... Need any information!

I would be really interested in seeing some photos for my own personal learning. I am beginning to study this Dunhill early period in more detail and want to gain a better perspective of the 'Charatan influence/transition/Joel Sasieni/Dunhill/Dunhill emerging period'(I just made that up, but...

Fraised Stummel Sharing by English Pipe Factories

The difference I saw immediately between the two pipes (one Dunhill and one GBD)was the quality (line) of the bend on the mouthpiece, which, in my opinion, is far superior on the Dunhill Pipe.

Visiting the James Upshall Factory last week

Two days ago I decided to go to the James Upshall Factory as I was in the area. On the way there, I was feeling excited and a bit wierd as I have not been there for 28 years. I seemed to know every bend in the road as though it was yesterday. I arrived there and the first thing I felt was the...

    Interesting Charatan Supreme

"Charatan is one I don't collect because most are simply too large for my use" I have a very rare and fairly small Charatan 1920-1930 lovat (Dunhill group 3) it is a Charatan 'Extra'which I will be putting on ebay. According to Tad they are extremely rare and cost £8.00 in 1920 and £12 in 1930...

    Interesting Charatan Supreme

Looking at the stamping on the shank, it looks like a 1950s Charatan. It is the ealiest 'Herman Lane/Reuben Charatan' that I have ever seen.Yes Al, the mouthpiece looks original, and very possibly hand cut and retains the classic English 'short'proportions in the length. At that time, it was the...
